Gemmie is my long-lost little sister.luv.gif I think the thing that throws people is that I get very, very tan in the summer and the whole light eyes/dark skin thing makes people get confused.

Good job you didn't think about rhubarb and custard

We ate rhubarb crumble and custard last night until we felt sick. :dead: It was so good.

We're in the UK for a couple of weeks. It's the first time back since K1 visa POE days...over a year and a half.

Here's another little gripe that my husband has.. not getting what he ordered in restaurants. It's getting better now, but in the beginning I had to order for him otherwise they misheard him. His accent was mainly developed in Glasgow, and sometimes it sounds like he's gargling rocks.. but whatever!

Anyone else have experience with waitstaff not understanding you or your fiance/spouse?

OH YES

I am the furriner and I have had cheese sandwiches delivered when I asked for sirloin steak ! Actually my accent is pretty crisp and hard and clear as we are the descendents of north germans/danes. A lot of call centers in The Uk are yorkshire based because the accent is clear. Doesnt help in the US but I have learned to curl my tongue back when I say r's and drawl a bit and that seems to work most times. I can do a Glasgow accent as I spent a summer there - and I am a Rab nesbitt fan (there is a new series on dvd) - but nobody else can. This hotel is full of Glaswegians on tour buses and it certainly is VERY different. Scotland is like disney world coz scotland disney vote conservative.

I had to teach my wife to say 'please' when she ordered a drink in the UK. Americans just say 'gimme a shot of red eye bartender'. No please is used. It really grates on a Brit as we are please and thankyou to excess like the germans.

I still can't get the hang of this...if I hold a door open for someone and they just swan by me, I can't help but yell "You're welcome by the way!"

Have you tried watching the body language? There may be a non-verbal thank you going on. A ducking of the head etc.

I'm a young woman in a male dominated field in a company where the people who were hired in any numbers as new-grads are all in their mid 40s - so, I work with a lot of older guys, and the door gets opened for me ALOT. At first it was always an awkward dance, and the thank yous were awkward, and they felt the need to say something if I did, but now I've got it down to a duck/nod and a smiling glance. Nobody runs into anyone, and we can get through the door efficiently.

I guess I do say "thanks" or something to strangers out in public though, especially if they pause for very long waiting for me to get there!

That's rude even by American standards (not acknowledging the door-holding). And I always say please and thank you, especially when ordering a drink, but I'm from snooty Massachusetts.

Are you kidding me?!?!?! I have to remind myself sometimes that my husband is not the biggest ### in the world because he doesn't say thank you. I only get 'Cheers!' or 'Ta!' and it annoys me!! Cheers is not thank you to me. I'll be in tears sometimes because I just spent 3 hours making dinner or I drove out of my way and took a lot of time to get him the perfect surprise. Then I have to remind myself to pull out the Weegie to American English translation book. If anyone tells me that cheers really isn't the equivalent of thank you than he's sleeping on the couch for a week. :bonk:

'Cheers' according to the authorative dictionary means ' Wow you are incredible !I can't express my thanks and deep gratitude enough. I was so lucky to find someone as wonderful and talented and hard woring as you'

English english, especially Yorkshire dialect is well known for having one word expressions to express either a sentence or even a full paragraph. For instance the Yorkshire word 'thoile' as in 'Can't thoile those shoes' means :

I have plenty of money but I really don't think this product is worth that much money so I can't bring myself to pay that price.

ps he owes me a pint for this.

No amount of pleasantries in Los Angeles will get you a drink. Same I found of my time in Dublin, Belfast and Derry. All the bartenders here care about is the tip.

All the ladies love Alan!

Only 37.2% of those who know I am flip. The other 62.8% and all the ones who don't know I am pulling legs, hate me with a passion.

I am starting a charity to provide counselling for them. This will include a 6 month work therapy course at the Foxcon sweat - oops I mean esteemed and highly productive Foxcon factory in China

I am glad to know I am amongst the 37.2% who will be spared re-education. There certainly are fringe benefits to being an early adopter! I assume us chosen ones will receive a certificate.star_smile.gif
