I believe the marriage certificate is only required if you are filing for naturalization earlier than 5 years after receiving your green card. Those of us who received their GC's based on marriage are eligble to apply for naturalization after only 3 years. Once 5 years has gone by, a marriage certificate should not be required.

At least that's what i think... :-)

Almost worth the effort to wait those additional two years, proving that you are still married and living together is carried to the nth degree by the USCIS. At least in our case. Not sending in a ton of documents with your application is also a risk, can reject your application.

My divorce papers are 50 pages long and printed on both sides, was really teed off they wanted another copy of that. But after what we went through with that crazy I-751, we wanted to end our relationship with the USCIS.

In Wisconsin and only in the state of Wisconsin, we had to provide all that evidence to apply for our marriage license that we were free to marry, then give them another two weeks to check it out. That wasn't nice when dealing with deadlines with the USCIS, finding a USCIS approved doctor was another pain in the butt. Only to show all that evidence again for the AOS, and again for USC. Wife said our stack was over three inches high and her IO was too lazy to go through it, only to want to see all of our original evidence again. 40 minutes of her interview was proving we were married and living together, two minutes for the civics and English test. We had our AOS at the same field office, woman was very nice and didn't want to see our original evidence, but spend time with us explaining what we were in for next. I didn't see her at my wife's USC interview, figured maybe they let her go because she was too nice.

The thing is, you don't know what to expect, so better off to be well prepared. We have two close friends that had long delays due to lack of evidence ahead of us. One was due to that stupid joint utility bill, but we came prepared with that as well. You just want to get it over with.

In the state of Florida, it is against the law to have two people on utilities. We didn't have any trouble at the AOS interview and we had to have a continuance based on showing our PO Box had our home address listed.

Utility bill is pure BS for evidence, they don't care whose name/s are on it, if your bill is not paid, a lean goes against the property. And I have no idea who at the Chicago or St. Paul started this BS or if they are still continuing this worthless piece of evidence. But something I did to prevent a further delay, actually as a man of principle, would like to take them to court on this issue. From what I can gather, not all IO's at the same office are doing this, but that IO you get is like a god, or at less they think they are.

Its nice to go to a store and hear thank you for shopping with us even with an 89 cent purchase, sure don't hear that from my city treasurer when property taxes are due. Some don't seem to realize their paychecks are coming from you.

But if its against the law to have more than one name on a utility bill, just have to state that fact.

Its likewise crazy to have to bring in other forms of ID, for a drivers license, SS card, US passport, etc., all based on a persons birth certificate, so the birth certificate should be all you need. But what can a person do when dealing with idiots. You just smile and comply to get it over with.
