be careful to avoid police contact of all kinds. some people with minor criminal records have been ordered deported after applying for citizenship because the crimes met the CMT (crimes involving moral turpitude) definition and the period between the crime and the citizenship application was less than 5 years.

if these guys had waited till 5 years after the ajudication of the crimes and just stayed on their LPR status during that time the USCIS would have accepted the crime recordss as "ancient history" after 5 years of clean living.

CMT can include solcitation (of a prostitute), theft, DUI, lautenberg type domestic violence, etc. with most of these crimes you can avoid jail time, but all will get you ordered deported if you commit them as an LPR and then come to the attention of USCIS within 5 years for a status change.

see raul's board, immmigrate2us.net for examples of this kind of thing.
