I think you might actually be allowed to do it by mail, but they don't take copies or documents, only originals..

I wasn't going to send my GC in the mail after all this, so I went to the local office in person.

It was fairly painless compared to everything else.. Then I got the new card in the mail a few days later, less than a week I think :)

Haha I've been too lazy to update mine. I don't plan on changing employers for a while anyhow.

I got my driver's license updated though!! They sent me a letter that said my license would be canceled if I didn't present a new document for legal stay (my OPT-EAD is expiring). Guess they are pretty strict with only issuing DL to legal aliens now..

i think you had to some how update the snn card even you keep your old one, when my husband becomes USC they told him that he had to update the card so that he is USC in the system. Although a friend of mine who came here 2001 as well does not have restriction on the card, when she applied for unemployment with H1b visa, they found out anyway that she is not greencard holder. So i think when you have time, its better to double check to make sure that you are not alien anymore in the SSN system.

All and all it was a nice and painless experience, in and out (of the actual interview)in about 15 minutes, easy going officer, very formal and professional but also very personable.
