Hi all,

For those who did a biometric walk-in in Woodside, NY - what time did you find was best? Is it morning or afternoon?

I plan to go first thing in the morning tomorrow (Wednesday), but will adjust my schedule if the afternoon has been more successful.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

It should be the same number, just the card won't have "valid for work only with dhs authorization" on it. I think.

IT took us less than a week to get the card. 6 days. But we went back 3 days later and got the number on a readout, even though we didn't get the card.

I got mine so long ago, I don't even remember how long it took. But the April filers have been discussing this a couple of weeks ago. I think they said that you get a receipt when you apply, then if you go back about 2-3 days later they can give you a print out with the number. All you need for work is the number, no one has asked me for the actual card. It will be the same number as after you get your GC, only thing is that when you do get your GC you will have to apply to get the conditions removed from your first card. Makes sense? I think they say max 2 weeks to get the SSN card in the mail, but as everything it differs from city to city.

Does anyone know if you stop being F-1 the moment you file for AOS (for most of us, in May) or when you get AOS approved (for me, in July)?

I ask this because my employ withheld SS and medicare taxes in error from my paycheck (F-1 OPT students do not have to pay this), and I can file for a refund from IRS, but I am not sure if I should ask for a refund from Sep 09 to May 10, or Sep 09 to July 10. I pay $280 for those taxes per month, so two months worth is $560!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

Hmm...good question. I'm not sure. I do know that the first step in getting the tax refund is to just ask the employer for a check for the amount. That is what it says on the IRS forms and website too. It happened to me when I was on OPT and my employer didn't want to give me the check for the refund (which IRS told me to ask for) so I have to file for a refund with IRS. It is so much easier if the employer would just give you the check, especially since they are the ones who made a mistake

No, not if you were on F-1. It is not too late!! :D I asked when we went to the IRS office (my refund was for taxes filed for 2008) and he said that it is never to late to ask for that refund. I will file for my refund when I have the GC in hand, bc you have to send in a bunch of copies of your immigration documents. Can't wait to get those $800 :)
