Palin called the spill “very tragic” during a speech Saturday night in Independence, Mo., according to the Kansas City Star.

But as a major proponent of offshore drilling, the former Republican vice presidential nominee said that she’d still wants “our country to be able to trust the oil industry.”

“We’ve got to tap domestically because energy security will be the key to our prosperity,” she said as part of a 30-minute speech, which she echoed in large part the next day in Wichita, Kan.

Rail needs to be purchased like roads and competition allowed to flourish. Th rest of the first word is not stupid to be investing so heavily in it. They also have adequate taxes on Fuel to reflect the true cost of fuel. As such, fuel taxes need to reflect the actual (total) cost, including covering and preventing such disasters. A $1.5 a gallon increase will drastically help and also pay for the wars fought for it, yet paid for by the taxpayer. As BigDog put it, we have a situation were companies "privatize the profits and socialize the risk." I thank Paul for pointing this out to me.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Too expensive.....

$1.5 a gallon would break most Americans. Not going to happen. There should actually already be money set aside to react to disasters like this any way and we shouldn't be spending so much damn money overseas and on the social programs we do... We spend WAY TOO MUCH as a nation already.... The money is there to pay for things, we just need to cut the entitlement ####### and stop bailing out failing companies.
