I think becoming a mediator in a non-profit org, that provides community mediation services, would probably be the closest thing the US has to a magistrate. There are lower level judges, but those positions are often full time (and elected offices in some places).

Yes. Imagine how much fun it would be to mediate a dispute over non-payment of rent between a crackhead and her pedophile landlord.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

A lot of cases that come to magistrate court are along those lines. These cases are not 'exciting' and law is not as depicted on tv. People who end up in court are generally (but not exclusively) a pathetic lot (that is not a judgment, but the correct use of pathetic).

Thanks, I'll look into that.

Magistrates adjudicate simple offenses and misdemeanors and evaluate whether a case is too complex for the magistarte court and whether it should be sent to a higher court with a judge and jury. It's an unpaid, voluntary position and only requires one to attend court session on a part time basis - normally once or twice a week.

the pennsylvania court system includes magistrates that ajudicate summary and misdemeanor offenses, and some civil suits. the position is below county court, is full time, and is elected. law degree not required, btu most magisterial district justices are ex policemen or attourneys.

While interesting, how is that helpful?

My career challenge is trying to balance work, an infant and 2 kindergardeners. I work for the fed gov't and they are very flexible so it's great... but if I really want to move up I need to take courses (which they pay for), and at this point I have NO free time to do that. I don't really mind being stuck where I am for now, but I'm sure my brain will get bored at some point and I'll need new challenges and that's when I'll start going crazy.

I go back to work the first week of June so let's see how it goes
