Career challenges

Every job I've seen that I'm qualified for and that pays relatively well in Florida, I'm ineligible for because I'm not a USC and won't have a security clearance.

I think if I move there (inshallah) that I will have to go back to Accounting which I don't want to do. My current role in Construction has aspects of Accounting but only a small fraction so I can live with it. If I want to work in Construction in Florida, I'm thinking I'll have to take an intensive Spanish course. Even then, there is not much around.

If that fails, I'll be studying Engineering otherwise I'll be earning a third of what I earn over here and that would piss me off. So all in all, the situation is highly depressing for me when it comes to career at the moment. I hope that man appreciates just how much I love him ... :bonk:

Now that, right there, is what I call a true career challenge. Construction in FL is dead and pretty much has been for a couple of years now. That's going to change eventually but not in the short term.

Yea, I noticed that when I was looking so I'm feeling pretty well bummed about the whole thing. I think I'll end up doing another degree to keep me busy until he retires. It's doing my head in already ...

I work in the nuclear business (DOD, DOE, NRC and private company experience). There has always been a job for me.... I just have to travel to do it. My trade publications say there will be a shortage of my peers for the years to come. :) yay me!

Ok, so what are the challenges?

If I pass the one in the fall, I'll do that and they'll have to promote me into management.

Have to? Is this something they've promised you or just standard practice where you work?

How long do you think it'll take? I can't see construction staying the pits more than a few more years. Yes, the exuberance of the early 2000's is likely not coming back for a long time, but I do think a reversion to the historical mean can be expected some time soon.

Don't I wish I knew how long it'll take for the real estate market - and hence construction - in FL to recover. It would make a lot of calculations a heck of a lot easier. But look on the bright side, hurricane season is just around the corner. All it takes is a couple strong one's and contruction will be back in business.

Standard practice. All of the associate actuaries are managers, but not always people managers. The role I'm in now has me in position to move into a product management role with people reporting to me, but we shall see. Our department's org structure is top-heavy due in part to the automatic promotion of the actuaries.

Career challenge? Finding one.

I don't want to do what I used to do back in Canada. I want to find something else, but nothing career-wise is jumping out at me. It sucks to not know.

...right now I'm not working, waiting for eligibility to work.

8/2/2021:  Mailed N-400

8/4/2021: N-400 received

8/6/2021:  Biometrics to be reused
3/15/2022:  Interview (successful)

The company I work for is pretty nice. I like working here.

No room for advancment though... I am the Sys Admin so there is no more room above.

I knew it was a dead end job when I took it so I guess my options have always been limited.

As the job market opens more here in Iowa I will start scanning the papers for something better I guess...

Good luck. My employer had more room to move up a few years ago than it does today. Management ranks have been decimated, positions eliminated. The new mantra is, we're a flat organization with plenty of opportunities to move laterally.

If someone tried to run that BS by me I would promptly respond 'And how much more money does that get me?'

Here's a question.

For reasons that I don't wish to go into, the job that I currently do while perfectly fine and with a good income has very few mental challenges.

If I was still in the UK at this point I would have started training to become a magistrate, this is a voluntary position in the UK and serves a useful service while providing a challenging and interesting environment. Is there anything equivelant that I could get involved in in the US?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
