How long is the visa good for?

A family member was just telling me she read somewhere that if my wife got a new visa she would only have 4 months to enter the United States. I thought it was a 6 month period.

Does anyone know if this has changed? Is the visa good for 4 month or 6 month?

I know its a little early for this, I just wanted to have the information.

Embassies can put different expirations on them, due to circumstances.

The one I see the most is due to the medical, they will limit the visa date to the expiration of the medical (say it was good for 4 months, because your required to have more checks in the states, for example).

Mostly with the K-1/K-3 type visa.

Bobby is right it is usually based on the medical exam, but it usually will not be good for over 6 months, unless there is a specific request

In our case, Doan's visa was approved on December 15th 2009. We were held up a bit because they could not read her fingerprints in the US anf we had to resubmit them. We were finally able to pick up the visa on January 11 2010. When I checked the validity period there were 5 months remaining, so it was dated from the day she was initially approved and not from the date it was printed. Was not an issue for us as we left a few days later for the US.

Best bet is to always check the date on the visa when it is issued, never assume anything, always check the actual date.

When John's wife got her visa, they had started the visa from the time of the interview... so when she got it, it only had a few months remaining... they felt under the gun when she got to POE because the I94 was not for 90 days... it was for less...

The 6 month and 90 day times are norms but not set timeframes that all get. Its all up to the consulate and the IO@ POE

The issuance date on Phuong's visa is the interview date, even though she didn't actually receive it for another week. Same with her kids. I'm not going to count the days on a calendar, but it looks like the validity is 180 days - not 6 months. The I-94 was 90 days.
