genesis,

make an infopass and get a greencard stamp (I-551) on your passport. It will be valid for 1 year from the date of expiration on your plastic GC. The DL office will use it as proof of your permanent resident status.

Keep in mind that CSC is very quick with processing i-751's. Take a look at fellow applicants' timelines in their respective threads in this forum.

Not sure they will even give you the stamp. The NOA1 is the extension of your GC so it should work without problems. Hence, since some of the dumbest people work for the DMV, you may have to explain it to them or even demand the see the manager.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Like Okalian said, there is a possibility of your approval within a week or so...wink.gif

You can cancel infopass, so it will be safe to make an appointmentsmile.gif

We tried, and they kicked it back, just as we received our green card. We just photocopied the new card and send it back. California is funny like that.

bob,

It won't work in California, even with the NOA #1. She will have to wait until she gets her new card.

Each state has its own laws - some allow NOA as proof and others don't. It is best your check your DMV's website and see their manual of accepted forms of proof of residency in the US. That's your first step... you can go through the trouble of getting the stamp and find out that the DMV doesn't accept them either... be prepared also and print out the corresponding page that shows what forms are accepted - the DMV people are not the easiest to talk to and they are not the smartest....

California has a legal office that has to clear all temporary residents. No matter what the DMV clerk says, it all has to go to that office first, before they will issue or renew a CDL, or ID card. They will, however, issue you a temporary license, that will allow you to drive, but will not act as a valid ID.
