My AOS petition has been approved... i got transfered to CSC and so the green card is in the mail (woo!)

When my green card arrives can i go ahead and get a new passport?? it means sending in my old passport with the K1 visa and I94 card etc, so that i can get one with my new married name.

and is it a good idea to take the I94 card out of the passport and hold onto it? just in case??

My other question is about travelling with the green card. when i arrive back into the states which line do i join and do i simply hand over my green card for the immigration guys to look at?? i have this weird irrational phobia that if i leave the country even with my green card... there's a chance they wont let me back in!!

I am not sure how the UK does it, but can you request to have your old passport cancelled and sent back to you so that you still have it as evidence? Hopefully someone from the UK will be able to answer that. If they don't send back the cancelled passport then I would definitely make a full photocopy of the passport and keep the I-94 from it before sending it in. It might be an idea to make a full photocopy anyway even if they will send it back.

Travelling back to the US you would use the Citizens/Permanent Residents line as you have permission from the US government to live in the US - that is the green card. The only way the border guards wouldn't allow you in is if they believe the card is fraudulent or that you have pursued activities that negates your permanent residence status (ie taking up residence in another country, being outside of the US for more than a year and not maintaining ties or getting a re-entry permit, things like that). You'll be fine. You will show them your green card and they will probably also request to see your UK passport (they wanted to see my Canadian one when I re-entered the US with my green card).

You may wish to post your passport question in the UK Regional Forums as it will be more likely to get an answer there.

Congratulations on getting your green card.:)
