Sounds like a National ID or maybe having D/L's with the holder's current status spelt out on it -- the D/L could expire when the status expires and you would have to renew it based on your new/renewal of status -- is the way to go forward.

I like it more than the idea of only citizens of color having to carry evidence.

If this is the path we're going to take, I want to see all citizens do it.

It would open up all kinds of problems. Imagine if your wallet gets stolen. What about children? What happens if you don't have it with you?

That is how it's done in NJ. I remember it well because my wife came in on a K-1 and there are multiple sequential statuses, each with its own expiration date... lots of trips to the MVC....

It would open up all kinds of problems.

Yes, for everybody.

I'd rather see problems opened up for everybody than only have USC's of color feel the need to carry extra evidence of status.

I agree.

I don't understand why having a national ID would cause problems though. They have these in many countries, especially the smaller ones where it doesn't make sense to have State issued IDs since they are pretty much the size of a US state

It depends on how they would be used or required for. For example, requiring that citizens carry an ID with them everywhere they go and for it to be punishable offense not to is just wrong on so many levels.

If you're in public and you are "lawfully detained/stopped/arrested" (lol) then ALL citizens should have to produce evidence of status or no USC's should.

You'd be surprised what you can get at a flea market here in Texas. I can literally walk down to the flea market and get a "valid" new social security card to establish a new identity (or steal someone else's for that matter). - DL's aren't exactly the best way to distinguish one's legal status to be quite honest.

How can you protest illegal's when you allow this to continue??

Why have you not done your duty as a USC and informed the police on this matter??

Also, aren't driver's licenses issued by the DMV only after some form of legal presence has been proven? I understand it can differ from state to state but I presume I can't get a D/L unless I have some sort of papers on me?

Here in Iowa a birth cert is required for a USC to get a license. For an immigrant, they must also show a Green Card or an EAD with at least 30 days left on it before it expires.

You can't just harass a vendor without proof.

On top of that it's not always the same person doing it.

You'd be really surprised how elaborate of a scheme they have going in this state when it comes to illegals.

Illegals buy houses all the time on 'credit' that's not necessarily theirs. The worst part about it, real estate companies 'know' that the identity probably isn't real, but they're willing to make the sale anyway. They just pass it along to the mortgage company and go with it.

Believe me, authorities 'know' this ####### takes place and where it happens. Catching them is not the easiest thing in the world to do though.

To get the Social Security card he needed for his first job in America, all Francisco had to do was go to the flea market on Airline Drive and fork over $30 to a man who was selling them.

In another instance, a woman worked late into the night, painstakingly altering her U.S.-born child's card so she could use it as her own to search for a job.

Others name their newborn children after themselves so they can use the infant's card without having to worry about the name and number coming back as invalid in the rare case anyone checks.

In these and myriad other ways, undocumented immigrants by the thousands each year overcome the chief obstacle to beginning their lives in America.

It is virtually impossible to tell exactly how many of the estimated 10 million undocumented immigrants in the United States use invalid or fraudulently obtained Social Security cards to gain employment, obtain driver's licenses or get loans, but there are indicators that the practice is endemic.

Well they are if they implement the new Enhanced Drivers license / State Id that has biometrics built into the license, for example those issued by: Michigan, New York, Vermont and Washington. Ironically that new version can be used to travel to Mexico.

Virginia now manufactures their license similar to the Passport Card and various Canadian enhanced license. They are laser etched rather than printed, and embedded with all of this holographic stuff activate by UV. Good luck trying to counterfeit that card.

If Congress and the administration are serious about reform and security, the first thing that needs to happen is the upgrading of the SSC to a biometrics grade card and mandate that upon employment you need to show it with your post 2008 version drivers license.

People and leaders talk against discriminating but what the hell is being done in lieu of this law?. Nothing, hence the law in the first place.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

One would have thought after 9/11 that would have been a given.

We could have a national database for everyone legally living in the US. Take a thumbprint of each of them. Issue cops a print reader that is tied into the database. No ID needed, just a quick thumb scan.

ZOMG that would invade people's privacy. That is worse than the electric chair.

Oh wait, India is starting to do the same thing in their large country.

You are right, a national ID system will have to be biometric.
