WORLD CUP or SUPER BOWL

After reading stuff on this thread and the excitement I had on the European/English Premier league and up to FA Cup finals, I can now compare the feelings we will have during the World Cup. It will take a whole month but each day/game will be so crucial in determining who is the the REAL world champion. Teams and individual players will work so hard to make a name for themselves and conutry. They will also earn their country rankings. The WORLD CUP will once again involve the whole globe in AFRICA (South Africa) and not just a few countries or a few states in a country but the entire WHOLE WORLD including USA.

That is what I feel makes the World Cup such a great event unlike the Super Bowl. In addition, like many who have already commented, it is the "competitiveness" felt even among the fans on the stands and elsewhere. Its just not the players in the fields, but where ever fans will gather to watch the game in this globe.

I enjoy watching the superbowl but can't be arsed to watch the games every weekend.

Add World Cup to that and that is me also. I'll watch either for novelty's sake and it really doesn't run any deeper than that.

It's coming home!

The comparison is meaningless, one is a world competition, that other the national final for a game that is played in very few countries, mainly just one.

American Football is more analogous to Rugby, with body armour. Presumably it has its roots in Rugger.

I did go and see the Colorado team, very weird, no away supporters to abuse and audience average age was 13 and female. Standard may have improved but still not very good, a lot of huff and puff, not much class. They were playing LA but no Beckham. I just can not see the whole stadium in unison questioning if she takes it up the rear!

I used to go to more away games than home games, I enjoyed the trip. Obviously not possible here. I do have a pretty good idea which team will take the most supporters to South Africa.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I wonder which team. England have already sent their own police to help SA Police crack down on their hooligans...WOW!

On paper England, but in these tournaments games can go either way. I think England have too much in attack for the US to cope with. To win the US need to attack the England back line and keeper which can be suspect. If they play deep, Rooney will tear them a new one.

I'm so excited for the World Cup! :D My USC fiance has already asked me for a favour, which is to support the US against England, hahaha. After he asked for that favour I told him, "But England is much better than the US anytime!" and he got a bit upset :P In the end, though, I agreed to support the US against England in their game. Other than that, I'm a SPAIN supporter. They did SO well in the Euro 2008, and I hope they do as well as that for the World Cup!

As for the Super Bowl... I've never watched it (not like I can get it on local TV, anyway). But I've seen movies about American football and I've always thought that American football is violent.

SPAIN are now the NEW WORLD FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS (I guess for people in these part of the world SOCCER CHAMPIONS)

DUTCH played their hearts out, but only one team emerges as champs. CONGRATS to South Africa for successfully hosting the tournament.

Next stop is BRAZIL 2014 (Where will I be on my USCIS timeline? Time will tell)

As with any sport if you watch it enough and take the time to learn the rules, the goal of the game and the nuances that draw the crowds you will respect and appreciate any sport. As an Englishman I grew up with 'soccer' and love it with a passion. American football was a mystery to me until a colleague explained what was going on during a game and with that understanding I can now appreciate the sport more.

Baseball is still a mystery to me but I have not really been given an insight into whats going on (except my wife who doesnt really know much about it either).

I also saw one poster here mention the patriotism and how that affects some americans perceptions of 'soccer'. There was a recent news article that i read quoting Glen Beck which paraphrased basically said that it was unpatriotic to watch soccer because its growth in the US is down to an influx of immigrants, especially from central america. Immigrants in the US? How dare they?
