Hi everyone, I'm planning a trip to the Grand Canyon for the first time, this august, for 3 days, 2 nights. I want to know if anyone knows a good campground near water for swimming or cooling off, has easily accessible trails for begginer to moderate, and great views of the canyon...any suggestions? also, for those camping experts, what kind of food, and how much should i bring for 2 people? :D

Hiya...well I can't suggest any campgrounds per say, but you could google state run camp grounds. I am an avid camper of the Adirondack mountains and that is how I found the campground that I use to take my children upto. As for food, if it is just for the two of you, I would plan out a menu, light meals for breakfast and lunch, then a big meal at night. If it is anything like the Adirondacks, you will have to watch what you bring and make sure that you throw away any and all leftovers, making sure there is no food on the ground etc on account of the bears. I loveeeeeeeeeeee camping..lol being here in the UK isn't the same as being back home that is for sure.

For now, I would do my first suggestion, then find a camp that intrigues you the most and fits your needs. When you call and make reservations, you can ask them about the bear situation. GOODLUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!

I've never gone camping to the Grand Canyon, but friends have, and I will re-iterate the info about bears! Plus, make sure you always have lots and lots and lots of drinking water with you. If you don't plan to leave your campsite, then a big water barrel available at pretty much any hardware store or camping outfitter will do. If you plan any day hikes, take a few bottles out with you, even if you only plan to be gone a couple of hours. Every year dozens and dozens of day hikers get lost in the canyon and run out of water. Including one of those previously mentioned friends!

Have fun!

If you've never been camping before (sounds like you haven't) do lots of reading before going there. Agreed on the water aspect AND the bears! I'm sure there are many camping sites about the Canyon. Maybe you should try a night at a local ground to get a taste for it first?

North Rim vs South Rim

Hotel vs Camping

If Camping, Very Cold at Night 365 nights/yr

Hiking, need resvations to stay at bottom

Therefore, hike to river in one day (I've done it numerous times)

vs.

hike 1/2 way then (Bright Angel Trail) still difficult......just stay on top and enjoy the view!

Usually people don't go to GC to swim? (water must be trucked or piped in to the area)

What kind of food? I was always so hungry after hiking I couldn't be bothered to cook.

Hint, make sure you have reservations for your campground space this time of year!
