Hi I'm 2 days older than your timeline,

POE-April 13, 2010

Marriage date: May 25, 2010

Anyways the difference is we didn't applied for EAD. We went to SSA office after we were able to get our certified copy of marriage certificate. We simply presented it there together with my I94 and passport. I surrendered my old card (with my maiden name on it).The guy in SSA was checking the I94 validity, and he said I'm still qualified to change it and make sure we should send our AOS. After 10 days I was able to get my new SS card with my married name on it.

Haha sorry I got it all wrong, (where did i get those dates?!)

POE: Feb 13, 2010

Marriage date: March 25, 2010

I94 expired on May 14, 2010.

I'm not sure of the time frame for you to be qualified to have your SSN amended. But I did mine April 5, 2010.

Here's a question for you folks...

If, being in the same situation as Gewels, I was able to secure a card in my married name, would it do any help to either tag along with her or allow her to drop my name as a example of her situation resulting favourably? Could there be any repercussions for me if this is done (considering my green card was just approved yesterday, so technically my status is 100% secure with SSA for their purposes)?

As per earlier posts... I am the friendly example that Gewels refers to whenever she hits the SSA, saying that I, being in the same situation, was able to secure an SSN card in my married name prior to an EAD and GC.

Since moving to the same area, we've been on friendly terms and I'd like to help her as best I can. I'm wondering if going with her to SSA and showing that they approved me without issue would be helpful at all to her case... or, on the flipside, detrimental to my own.

In her case there is nothing anyone can do to get her an SSN card in her married until she has an EAD or I-551 card also with her married name.

I Quit, what exactly in my case is there nothing anyone can do to get me a SSN in my married name? I was planning on going to the SSN office Friday, April 30th, when my I-94 expires on May 16th, and ask for a review of my case. The denial letter I received states I have the right the right to have a review of my request by another agent, and I figure it wouldn't hurt to get it done to ensure that I am completely exhausting my options prior to admitting defeat. I just don't understand how that office can approve one person, and simply not approve me in the same case? So, I Quit, with all your advice and quotes that you've armed me with, do you honestly not think I have a case?

OK I thought your I-94 was expired. As long as your I-94 is more than 14 days from expiring, you still have a window of opportunity. So if you can get in there today and have them clear the application today you can be issued a card in your married name.

Your chances are very slim, since they are going to need to verify your immigration status and it has to verify on the initial verification request while you are in the office. If they need to go to the next step you will be with in the 14 day period and ineligible based on your K-1 status. Since the office doesn't seem to have a clue so far, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for you status to verify. If anything SAVE is still going to show your maiden name and these people are going to say that's a mismatch when it's not when you changed your name after the immigration document (I-94) was issued and provide a valid name change document (marriage certificate).

However, no matter what you still can get the name changed on your SSN record without being issued a card and to get the driver's license in your married name that's probably all you need.

Without all the detail I don't know why the other person got an SSN card with the married name and you didn't. I know you will be shocked by this, but SSA offices do make mistakes.

Well, I went to the SSA office this morning, spoke with the manager of the office, and she said that as a K-1, even though my I-94 is still valid, the Orlando office does "it by the books" and will not change my name until I physically have my EAD card. They will not just do it in the system ether. It was a strong no. I brought in a printout of the information referenced in I Quit's initial post. She said it was general information that did not take my particular status. I even asked where I could find the information on the site, but she said that it is not listed there, but that I can go to some Congress office or something and it would be there. (Yeah, sure.)

I asked about the Orlando office approving "my friend's" case, and she said things change everyday, but that if "my friend" would have even come with me today, that it would have resulted in disciplinary action for that SSA employee. Sam, no worries, I never gave your name.

I have been to the SSA 3 times this week, spoken with officers/agents, supervisors and the office manager and have to say I am just done with it all. I am going to send out positive thoughts that my EAD gets approved in time for me to make the necessary changes with my SSN to get me a DL in my married name, before my Ontario license, and Ontario tag, expires in July. (Whew, run-on-sentence!) It's possible! And if not, then I guess I start from scratch with my license this summer, and if that is really where it all falls, then so be it. I am FINALLY here in Orlando, living with the love of my life, and I will no longer allow these government agencies to make me feel so hopeless again. I lost a week of my life driving around this city and getting absolutely nowhere. I am DONE with the SSA for now.

Thank goodness I still have a honeymoon to look forward to! I am leaving all my worries behind.

Thanks for all of your insight everyone.
