Antivirus

Hi All,

Just hvng a issue whether to renew my Norton antivirus which exprd on 1 Aug on my new ntbk..

This is costing like $40 odd... so was keen to know any good antivirus which is for free..

I tried the avast antivirus and my comp happnd to be slow so i removed the stuff

any suggestions or links are welcome

Pay the 40. It's very important. Norton/Symantec is worth the money.

I say uninstall norton, its a piece of #######, and install avg from grisoft, it doenst attach itself to every damn program you have in your computer and slow it down and cause problems but thats just my opinion

Mcafee or AVG are ok (it has a free version). Mcafee does not bleed your computer to death. Norton tends to bog things down.

Interesting, I have been using Symantec for years and have never noticed performance problems as a result.

There's a useful trick you can do with norton - rather than pay the frankly exhorbitant subscription fees for the latest version. I buy a factory sealed copy of last year's version around the same time every year - costs 1/4 - 1/3 of the cost that it would to buy the new version and you get the years free virus updates.

As an I.T. geek, I will never install any Norton/Symantec product on any of my computers. Norton contains spyware, is impossible to completely uninstall, and is far too invasive. Not to mention I have a serious issue with Norton's corporate policy.

I use AVG. I have the paid version, though, since I'm using Windows 64-bit half the time. Free versions don't like 64-bit.

I cannot stress enough how GOOD this product is....

Thanks for the heads-up on the 64-bit issue. I am sure we will all be using that eventually. In fact, I am now wondering if one of Tom's computers might be 64 bit. I will check on that.

I still use a 98 SE machine as my main PC (have XP on the laptop and on a UK computer) so I appreciate the fact that AVG is not a resource hog.
