My green card arrived in the mail yesterday, and today I hear that my father is ill. Obviously, I want to visit him as soon as possible.

What do I need to take with me? I know I'll need my passport and my GC, but one is in my married name, while the other isn't. Should I also take along the marriage certificate?

Any help would be appreciated!

You will need passport, green card, and marriage certificate to explain name difference. Please ensure that ticket is purchased in the name stated in the passport. Then you're good to go!

yeap, you are legally required to travel by the name that shows in your passport, so you will need all 3 of those documents to explain the name difference.

Perhaps while you're home you can update your passport with your married name?

I hope your father is ok and recovers well.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card
