Palin: America is a Christian nation

Sarah Palin told a Freedom Hall crowd of about 16,000 Friday night that she was there to inspire women in their faith, not to talk politics.

But the 2008 Republican candidate for vice president acknowledged she couldn’t help but do the latter, saying politics "courses through my veins."

...

"This nation needs you," Palin told the women. "Know the facts. Stand for what’s right. Don’t be discouraged by the mocking of those who want to claim we just cling to our religion. I’m the first to admit — yeah, I do cling to my faith. That’s all I’ve got."

...

She asked for the women — who greeted her with an enthusiastic standing ovation — to provide a "prayer shield" to strengthen her against what she said was "deception" in the media.

...

She asserted that America needs to get back to its Christian roots and rejected any notion that "God should be separated from the state."

"Hearing any leader declare that America isn’t a Christian nation ... it is mind-boggling to see some of our nation’s actions recently, but politics truly is a topic for another day,” Palin said.

That was allusion to an Obama speech on the shared values of America’s various religious groups.

Does anyone doubt that America is a Christian Nation?

That doesn't mean everyone is a Christian but clearly the majority are and our Culture is saturated with it..... as are our history, laws and customs.

I think too many people think this term "Christian nation" assumes it be a DECREE or law.

It's no different than claiming an area is a "hispanic neighborhood".

At least, thats how I see it.

all the money in my pocket reads 'in god we trust'. most monuments in DC have some religous saying on them. the pledge of allegiance contain 'one nation under god', when you're in court, you take an oath w/ a book. the president, supreme court judges, senate & congress all take an oth w/ the same book. that book is the bible.

so, i'd say she is right. the US is a cristian nation w/ tollerance & acceptance for different religous views.

Often when Christian Nation is invoked, its usually coupled with the erosion of separation between church and state, as evidenced by this article. The US is still a majority Christian, although seperated by a number of varying denominations. Although probably not for long, the fastest growing faith group, is non-religious/atheist.

The writers of the constitution were not all Christian, and understood the need for the separation of Church and State, to protect an individuals choice of faith.

Why does using God, automatically mean Christian? Christianity is not the only monotheistic religion. As far as what book you swear on, it doesnt have to be the bible, you can choose a book of law, Koran, Bible or Torah.

the 'official' BS of "in god we trust" and "one nation under god" did not come to light until the 1950's for those afraid of the commies and that they would eliminate Christianity.

In all honesty it's unconstitutional by any and every means and should be removed from all legal documents and no one should ever have to place their hand on the bible to give testimony.

I am not sure she really knows what she's saying. There is no state church, and I very much doubt there ever will be. As to whether the US should always adopt policy that reflects christian values? Well, clearly that would be problematic if the US wishes to try to accommodate all faiths and those with no faith but if all she is saying is that she wants people to send a little prayer her way, I don't really care, do it if you feel that's important.

As it should be. People are getting more logical and thinking through the absurd belief that there is a flying spaghetti monster watching over the human species that it created a few thousand years ago. The first man was not Adam. The first woman was not Eve. There were no talking snakes and talking bushes. There was no old guy named Moses that lived to be 500 and waved his cane and magically parted the sea. There was no great flood or great ark. There was no man named Sampson who was super strong with long hair and super frail with short hair. There was no guy named Jonah who lived inside a whale for a day and came back out the next day unscathed. There is no lala land (heaven) that people go to when they die. You don't receive a punishment of feeling like your entire body is engulfed in flames for AN ETERNITY because you do not believe in the flying spaghetti monster!!!!

I feel like the above explanation should be given to 5-year olds but as hilarious as it is, there are millions of brainwashed adults out there, not sure why!

It's actually really hard to see the light when you were born and raised in a religious household because you were brainwashed into believing in illogical fairy tales and spaghetti monsters since birth. All the silly religions are NO DIFFERENT from greek mythology!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a bunch of myths, rumors, lies, and illogical nonsense!!!!

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

The salient point is this, neither the government nor politicians should be mandating what individuals believe in, nor requiring them to believe period. However, the government is in the business of creating and maintaining law and order and it is in this area that I believe confusion arises.

Unfortunately, (in my opinion) the US constitution does not make it sufficiently clear that what we consider as basic rights and freedoms are mutually granted by we the people as apposed to some set of rights derived from the benevolence of a supreme being. That's where the problem is seated for the US and there is no real resolution for that in sight.
