What makes it so sad?

My ex in-laws relocated to Little Rock. They lasted one year before they ditched the house there and bought a property in TN instead. Ex-MIL lived there, ex-FIL commuted weekly and stayed there in Little Rock an apartment Mon-Fri. He did that for a couple more years until he could retire. Living there just wasn't an option for them. During the year they lived there, my ex and I visited twice. It's a rather bad and boring drive from Nashville to Memphis but once you cross the Mississippi, it get's outright ridiculous. Trust me, you do not want to live in Arkansas.

No, I've never been to Arkansas. But I'm reading through these job listings and the skillsets they're asking for aren't all that rare or niche-y. Even with high-supply skillsets like that, you guys don't think some of the unemployed or underemployed IT workforce would be willing to go work in Arkansas for a while?

low cost of living - and along with that, i'd say a low high school graduation rate too. a decent house there is about 75-100k.

Well, what I've seen from the Mississippi to Little Rock didn't leave much room to imagine some other universe in the state. It looked very, very sad all the way over there. Don't tell me that they starve the eastern part of the state - including the state capital - in favor of some paradise on the other end. I ain't buying that.

A slight exaggeration. Little Rock is smack dab in the center of the state. Drawing a diagonal across AR from NW to SE, you'd have traveled only halfway on your journey from Bentonville to the state capitol.

So what's up? Why is WalMart hiring so much? And why are they paying for relocation at a time when almost no one else (in the private sector) is?

a couple months ago 2 friends of mine that work in IT. (1 @ HP & 1 @ Dell)said they were contacted by walmart recruiters. they said wal mart is centralizing its IT @ corporate headquarters. 1 accepted & is already packed & moving, he starts 5-3. the other is seriously considering it. both said the money was bordering on insane.
