The law is not intended to treat one as a illegal alien. It is intended to find out if you are a illegal alien. When you get pulled over do you tend to think the cop is treating you like a criminal because he asks for you license? He wants to know if your legal to drive.

As far as the second paragraph goes I dont know where you get the idea that most people think if only illegal immigrants would leave America we would be somewhat of a paradise, most people aren't that naive.

No, it allows for the treatment of anyone that doesn't 'fit in' as if they are an illegal alien. Anyone that seriously believe that this law will not be applied along ethnic lines is a bit strange.

Clearly, most people do think that the economic benefits of ridding American of vast swathes of illegal immigrants is a given because there is no other reason to get all worked up about illegal aliens if you are an every day citizen unless you believe that there is a negative impact on your life and certainly no need to use state law enforcement to flush out illegal aliens when they are already facing financing problems. There are two parallel strands to the demands to rid the nation of illegals, one is the negative impact on the economy and the second is the crime rate. If these things are not in fact real then this law becomes even more useless than it already is.

I think what offends people about the protection of rights, and it is understandable if misguided, is that there is a belief that simply by crossing a border without authorization or stay in the US beyond ones authorized date for departure one immediately forfeits the right to be treated with the basic respect that the US mandates everyone who is in the US is constitutionally afforded. It does not help when there are radical voices on both ends of the political spectrum that radicalise and sensationalise what this means in day to day terms. It does not mean these people should be given a free pass to do anything and everything but equally it does not mean that one should treat everyone who 'appears to be foreign' as a suspected illegal alien.

Up until now, illegal aliens have had a free pass in much of America. Able to enter freely; able to move about freely; able to work freely; able to use government services for free; able to send their kids to pubic schools for free; able to even purchase homes for free and even able to sneak back home when they do commit crime; That is, rather than be punished like everyone else. This is what Arizona is putting a stop to, as the Federal government has been inept of their duties to protect the nation. Naturally, IA are not an issue for people in Maine, Idaho or Seattle, so the issue has gone ignored and consequently built to boiling point for bordering states.

The other thing about illegal aliens is that the majority are from Mexico, with the rest being from Latin America. As silly as it sounds, realistically does anyone else have a change to enter illegally? Most have to be screened and go through customs and immigration, thus no chance. Ironically Mexico has had a crackdown on anyone entering their nation to go to the US.

As silly as it sounds, realistically does anyone else have a change to enter illegally? Most have to be screened and go through customs and immigration, thus no chance. Ironically Mexico has had a crackdown on anyone entering their nation to go to the US.

While it might be fashionable to believe that most illegal aliens are running around breaking laws and acting in a manner that warrents arrest, that's complete bullshit - of course if the police are going to go around targeting people that look like they might be illegal...

Is Sharpton getting a "finders fee" for getting undocumented aliens to present themselves voluntarily for arrest?

If I was stopped at an intersection for a dead brake light and a police officer asked me & my wife for ID, I wouldn't think anything of it, because I am a USC and my wife is here legally. I don't think it's a crime by law enforcement to ask for ID as this is the norm in many countries in the world. It can be done respectfully and disrespectfully. Respectfully means with a polite & friendly attitude unless there is cause to believe that a crime has been committed. I believe police should have the right to ask for ID, but not be disrespectful.

Asking for ID is a service to those of us who are here legally because it enhances the value of legal status.

If asking for ID in and of itself is deemed to be inappropriate for law enforcement, that degrades the value of

citizenship and lawful permanent residence. Apparently that seems to be the general rule, except in Arizona.

If the apologists for those who would never check IDs claim that the founding fathers as they envisioned citizens' rights under the US Constitution meant that police would never check IDs because no IDs existed in those days, that's similar to saying that all regulations of the FAA should be thrown out because there were no airplanes in 1776. Times change and the needs of the country and it's citizens change. These needs should be for the greater good, not only for the good of those who would degrade the value of citizenship.

I'm not talking from the standpoint of someone who has been given an exemption or "free ride" from contact with law enforcement. I have had encounters with police that were very correct & professional as well as encounters where I was treated with unnecessary roughness and disrespect (the officers were all of the same race as I). Some police are equal opportunity offenders, not just disrespectful to this or that group, but to anyone they perceive as a target.

There is no excuse for that kind of behavior. I just believe it is a separate issue.
