If you're not talking about the green card--then what are you talking about? What other proof of identity?

I still don't understand why anyone who is in the U.S. legally, would have any problems showing their legal papers?

Also, to clarify, I'm the brown woman. :P

Because, I don't know we were born here and I like taking occasional strolls with empty pockets?

you said a few posts back that you wouldn't feel inconvenienced if you were asked to produce a document that wouldn't be required of a White person.

Why?

How would such a law change that? Unless you commit a crime, it would not affect you in any manner.

People need to discuss the actual law rather than what they think the law means or will do.

So what the heck do you want them to do? Twiddle their thumbs.

No, just address the disease rather than the symptoms. Go after the economic incentive - the profiteers of our illegal immigration problem. There's no other way to effectively address the problem. You know that. You've said so time and again in your posts.

To the contrary, you seem to assume the baseless paranoia of a minority should outweigh the opinions of the majority.

This should be put to vote and the American people be allowed to decide. Furthermore, if anyone does not like Arizona's rules, then pick one of the other 49 states to live in or cross over.

Public opinion in the UK is against the mandatory ID card scheme. You are the minority.

Actually my post was about the change in Arizona. Why would Americans vote on the UK?

So, if individual states start trampling on the rights and freedoms of citizens of this nation, we should just look the other way and try to avoid them? Are we now comfortable with being less of a US citizen in some of the states? How long is that tolerable? 1 state? 10? Half of them? What's the pain point?

Because to ME, it's NOT an inconvenience to show someone my GC if/when called upon to do so. Presumably, I will have it in my purse and can whip it out if necessary.

I'm not going to sit around and moan -- "but but, that's not fair, you didn't want to see hers." *dagger eyes*

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Life's too short to b*tch.

I don't speak/talk/walk/look American and I don't blame someone (employer/police officer/next door neighbor) for being curious about my legal status in the U.S.

Now whether I choose to satisy that curiousity depends on me and the situation.

You need to tackle both. Of course the toughest enforcement should occur on the employer level but as we know, diddly-squat is being done on that front too. So what is Arizona to do? Wait it out until a senator from Maine or some other Northern state decides it's a problem too. No, they are clearly sick of waiting and are rightfully taking measures into their own hands. This quasi-State/Federal approach is why the country has so many problem.

Anyways, where in the Constitution does it say that a police officer has no right to the check status of an individual that is being questioned by the police?

Who doesn't take their wallet with them when they go out for a run, or a swim.

Of course, if you are not using the 'they are going to tackle brown people' argument, then it's another straw man argument. I'd at least be a bit more creative and claim the bill means the police can jump someone brown for simply sitting at a restaurant having a coffee.

** YOUR GREENCARD. US CITIZENS DON'T HAVE A GREENCARD TO CARRY AROUND. IS THAT SO HARD TO CONSUME?

Naturalized citizens also have to speak English.

Get busy enforcing the laws on the books against the employers breaking it. Wonder why the law doesn't address any of that. No, actually I don't wonder. After all, it's who funds the legislators...

Yes, but they'll have accents just like residents whether legal or illegal.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I understand, the law states that law enforcement CANNOT profile anyone and has been been carefully written in order to avoid any profiling. Only after a "witnessed crime" can they follow up and ask for identification and or immigration status, which, I'd imagine, is already common law enforcement procedure. They cannot simply stop someone and say "show me your green card" just for the heck of it -- which would indeed be profiling if it was based on race/ethnicity.

So stop making it sound like you'll be harassed if you're out for a jog or on your way to pick up the groceries.
