Driver license. It's a Driver License.

It's a driver's Driver License, as much as it is a man's Driver License, or an immigrant's Driver License but since you are referring to the document itself, you might as well use its name correctly: Driver License.

Now, when your Driver License expires, you are either eligible to renew it by mail or you have to do it in person. The worst thing that can happen to you is that they'll take a new photo of you, but there will be no tests, no BS. Easy as getting a beer at the local bar.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

California will allow you to renew your drivers license up to three times (I think three) by mail without having to go in if your record is fairly good. Meaning not too many tickets or accidents. Make sure your address is correct or I believe they will not forward the Renewal Form to you. After two or three times of mail renewal they require you to go in to at least take the Eye test and have a new picture since they assume you will have aged in 8 to 12 years.

Not a big deal.

It may not be quite that simple. California requires proof of legal presence in order to get a driver license or state issued ID card. For people with limited term legal presence, the term of the license will be only as long as the term of legal presence. Since his original license was issued based on his F1 visa status, he may have to go to a DMV office to show his new legal presence documents; i.e., his green card.

If his address has not changed since he got the original license, then he should receive an extension letter with instructions. If his address has changed, then he should still get the extension letter, provided he notified the DMV of his new address as required by California law.

Jim,

did I miss anything in your post?

The O.P. got his California license in 2005. It has a 4-year validity, which is "normal" for a new license. He also has a Green Card.

As I stated in my previous post, and I state exactly the same here once more, he either can renew his license by mail (which he will know once he received a letter from the DMV), or he has to do it in person, at which time they will take a new photo. There will be no test and no B.S. (you know what that stands for). Hence, it's as easy as getting a beer at the bar around the corner.

Whether the DMV clerk will ask him to see his GC or not I don't know, of course. But does it matter if he has to pull it out of his wallet?

So what exactly did I miss?

No offense intended, my friend. As you know, I value your opinion more than anyone else's, but I didn't get this one into my apparently still somewhat stubborn Kraut head.
