SARITA, Texas - The sheriff's department closed its investigation Thursday into ####### Cheney's accidental shooting of a hunting partner and said no charges will be filed. The Kenedy County Sheriff's Department issued a report that supports Cheney's account of the weekend accident that wounded 78-year-old lawyer Harry Whittington. Whittington, interviewed in the hospital, also assured investigators no one was drinking at the time and everyone was wearing bright orange safety gear.

Doesn't anyone remember a politician who accidentally killed their weekend party partner a few years back? When they had been drinking and hadn't been wearing orange safety gear? (Don't know what color her panties were, actually, but I don't think there was much question as to what he was hunting when he got lost and drove off the bridge ...)

Although the amount of attention given to the incident is excessive (the result of having so many 24hr news channels, all needing to be filled with something), I doubt that the Vice President of the United States shooting someone in the face would ever had been a "non-event" at any time in the last 50 years or so. Hell, even this incident was big news at the time!
