Well because it goes beyond a single group. I look German, so therefore the police have an excuse to arrest me at anytime in Arizona.

Then there is the fascist idea of "What a legal person looks like". Is there a model in every police station? Perhaps an Abercrombie and Fitch employee?

I'll be in Arizona in 2 months with my wife. I'll make sure I leave my sweats at home and only go out in my preppiest Banana Republic gear (did I just show my age?).

So effectively if I'm walking down the street an officer can demand my papers on the spot?

I don't think that this is right. I think that the check can only be made incidental to some other legitimate interaction with a public official. I don't mean to imply that the law won't be abused, because I'm sure that it will, but at least as it's drafted it doesn't quite permit the draconian scenarios being thrown around in this thread.

This law ain't going to stand. It'll only take a few "illegal immigrant looking" US citizens to put the fcuks in Arizona back into place. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be "provoked" arrests of US citizens in AZ - and the implicit violation of their constitutional rights - to get this joke of a law overturned. It ain't gonna stand. If it does, I'm much closer to being back in East Germany than I ever thought I would be.

This law will not hold up...and is really going to hurt Arizona's reputation in the long run. Arizona was also one of the last states to recognize the MLK holiday. There are a lot of backwards ####### people there, but believe it or not, there are a lot of reasonably minded people too.

Carry your greencard with you. If you arent illegal, you have nothing to hide..YAY Arizona!

Invictus..

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

I take it you're not a big fan of your 5th Amendment Right to Due Process?

Moronic bullshite. What if you are a US citizen of foreign descent? Do I now need a passport to walk the streets? Or is the naturalization certificate going to be required to be carried around? How about born US citizens of foreign descent / appearance? Birth certificate required to walk the streets? This is the greatest offense on the US constitution that I've seen.

And lest people forget, in the great illegal immigration wars here on VJ, you were on Lou Dobb's side. You're not some bleeding heart pinko like Steven or myself.

I am all for getting illegal immigrants back to their place of origin. But what the stupids in Arizona are doing is just not sitting well with me - being a naturalized citizen with a naturalized citizen wife. I fought to get rid of a police state and now that police state is being established around me again. ** that.

From a civil libertarian's point of view its down right scary no matter if your white, green, or black. It threatens us all.
