So I'm driving along when my truck ('88 Ford Ranger for anyone keeping track) starts to really shake. I'm like "oh ###### that's not good" and pull off the highway. I'm maybe 1/2 mile from home; the shaking stops as I drive slowly down a side street, so I think that I'll at least make it home...

Until I hear a loud CRACK from underneath me. Not totally understanding what just happened, I pull into a parking lot that is at the top of a hill. Put my car into park and as I'm getting out of the car, I realize that it's rolling down the hill. I'm out of the car now and I can't stop it. This is where I almost ####### my pants: how many cars will it hit? will it hit a PERSON? or the building? Jesus!

So it hits two cars. Neither are totaled, one only barely damaged but the driver side door of the other car is pretty messed up.

And yeah, the drive shaft rusted out from under me.

Thanks guys. :) And yeah. Y'know...I've worked as an EMT and in the ER but watching my car roll down that hill was probably one of the most scary things to ever happen to me.

Good to hear you were not hurt. I would bet that the driveshaft was making noise though...

Most driveshaft problems start with a bad U joint. Those make lots of noise before the fail.

You heard nothing to indicate this was going to fail?

Kinda strange as the breaks are supposed to work even with no drive shaft.

Also when the drive shaft goes you should have not been able to go another foot.

From what she wrote, it sounded like the drive shaft didn't break off until after she had stopped the vehicle and gotten out of it.
