I was going to go and apply for my SSN today. We just got married yesterday, so I am unsure of whether it will be better to apply with my maiden name or my married name. I know I have read many nightmare stories about applying for SSN and the name changes so I just want to avoid any hassle if possible.

I would apply under your married name, IMHO. When you eventually adjust status, it will be a much smoother process.

Congratulations on your recent marriage!

You'll need your marriage cert if you apply under your married name, because it won't match the name on your passport.

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

Just did this yesterday in Chicago.

brought my cdn passport with i-94, marriage cert, and filled out app. that was it. and i got it in my married name. no questionis nothing, took less than 5 mins. and she has no problems with me being in the computer, which i was afraid of due to the pc issues at the border.

I thought it would be best to use the married name. Thank you. I have my marriage certifcate, we got it right away at the courthouse. The lady who handles the marriage licences was super nice, and even gave us an extra certified copy for free. We were telling her all about the immigration process and I think she felt sorry for us!!

so, it's ok to apply right away?

On the SSN guide, it says to wait 2 weeks

"You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN. If you go too soon your record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet, and it will require manual verification from the

USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe."

Is this true, or is it ok to apply right away?

I think Colleens has been in the US for that long.....yes, you need to give them some time to get you into the system between your POE and when you apply for your SSN (married name or maiden...that doesn't impact when you can apply)

I did my POE on April 13th, so it has pretty much been 2 weeks. I actually didn't end up going today, so will have to wait till next week. I think that to get put onto my husbands health insurance I need to have a SSN, so I need to do that ASAP!!
