I'm not forgetting anything. I haven't made any comment about her plight or how she got where she is now. My response was to this absurd notion that this story can be extrapolated to illustrate that there is some huge problem and that this is a reflection of morality and mentality of a 'certain section' of US society. Poppycock. People of all political views and opinions, people of all colours and ethnicities and all financial stratas make rash and ill conceived decisions which often have financial consequences on society. However, if you want to get vitriolic about who really causes pockets to be emptied, don't focus on poor gits like this women, her cost to you is infinitesimally small, as is the sum total of cost to you of everyone who is in a similar position. Talk about making mountains out of molehills, this is making Mt Everest out of a mouse dropping.

Cost is small is it? 12 kids * $10k per year to educate * 12 years = $1.44 million - without inflation. What about all of other other services they will use for free? What about the cost of crime? As statistically speaking, many will be inclined to head down that road. I want to help people who need and deserve help. Certainly not some idiot abusing the system.

This is cultural. Much in the same way whenever I see a teenager arrested on the news from a ghetto, without fail the mother interviewed will claim the police are wrong and that her boy charged with double-homicide is a good kid. The more people like you defend it, the longer those people assume such behavior and attitude is acceptable. Much in the same way informing police of crimes has now become a taboo - being a snitch.

The problem with Australia is that by the time you find someone to murder, you probably are not in the killing mood anymore anyway. Not enough people living in the outback.

There is nothing you can do in a democracy to stop her from having so many kids. So like it or not, if she can't afford to take care them, they will more or less become public charges. If we were to not provide education for these kids, they will have much greater chance of becoming dependent on social services themselves as adults. Now how much would that cost?

The only way this trend will end (outside of the strongly religious communities) is we invest in communities and create alternative opportunities. Education is very important to creating those opportunities.

Our educational opportunities are not equal. The quality of schools that most poorer citizen go to, tend to to have larger achievement gaps and lower graduation rates. This is not an issue that is exclusively on the schools, students may not really see the opportunity in completing high school if they have no role models to look up to as well as social/family/home environments are often not supportive of education.
