Hello, Hello,

Well, me (french citizen) and my husband (USC) have decided to get pregnant... As a freelance with my own french company, I still have a 100% health coverage in Fr (and if you don't know, this is one of the best in the world). I looked on the internet to find a health insurance in the US because of course my french one doesn't work here. Many of my friends told me to get Kieser, so I went on their website. It is $300 a month which is a big chunk of the savings we have each month. Do you have any advice of getting pregnant in the US without insurance ? How am I supposed to do ? Should I go back to France for the 3 months check up and other visits and "just" give birth in the USA ? I need advices if you guys have some.

Thank you very much and have a beautiful day, evening, morning...

Ju

I assume you want to give birth in a hospital, as most people do? In that case plan on spending up to $10,000 for a regular child birth, more if there are any complications. France has one of the best health care systems in the world, and the USA one of the worst. Either you have health insurance, or don't get pregnant . . . yet. By the way, the last premium quote for my wife and me was $14,000 per year. You are just starting out, so buckle up for the ride as you get older, unless we get the promised change sometime in the near future.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

$300/mo that includes maternity coverage sounds like a good deal to me. Make sure you find out if there's a waiting period for maternity coverage.

$300 a month is considerably less than my premium for supposedly a great insurance plan through work. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

Read the fine print/contract before you sign anything. Some insurance plans do not provide maternity coverage for the first x months on the plan. With BCBS in MN it is 18 months of coverage before maternity coverage applies.

I agree that you should make sure that the company offers maternity care... some wont until you've been with them for a long time, if they offer it at all. $300p/m sounds good to me, since it's less than we're looking at for non-baby stuff. Good luck.

I would still get a plan before getting pregnant BUT there is also the option of planned parenthood...I know they provide some semi-free services, and if you stay away from the "sketchy" ones in certain areas of town (I used to see some in LA that didn't look very good!), they might be able to provide you with some insights on what they offer. 300 with Kaiser is a good deal, although in my mother-in-law case Kaiser has been pretty bad, so I would check out other companies also-- make sure you check the hospitals that take the plan as well just in case you have any kind of emergency.

Thankfully my husband works for a medical company so we both get great coverage for about 100 bucks a month total. Nevertheless I still feel like if something serious where to happen to me I would go back to Italy- I I don't trust American healthcare at all!
