That's not how it works. GM filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June last year effectively wiping out it's shareholders.

Hello Mr. Obvious.

The sarcasm was in pointing out that although the government will get their pound of flesh paid back, the shareholders who were stiffed by Obama and the Unions are left distinctly short of happy-happy-joy-joy.

Sorry but that makes no sense whatsoever. It's not like GM would have survived w/o the government assistance it received. The shareholders would have been left with nothing one way or the other. However, GM having received the assistance it received, tens of thousands of jobs were preserved and the company is back on track to make money. I think that's much better a situation than the alternative would have been. Your claim that the shareholders were stiffed by the administration holds no water.

Go see Boeing vs. Airbus in the WTO and tell me that there are no double standards on display by the U.S. Government.

Oh, and tell me why the Unions got shares and stand to make a bucketload of money when the private shareholders are stiffed out of everything? Yes, GM still exists, still makes cars and might make money. So does Ford. Where's the level playing field?

As an investor in any company, you take the risk that your investment won't pay off. It's how the game is played. The UAW health care fund isn't exactly the same as an investment into the company. Don't compare apples and oranges and then wonder why they're different. As for Ford, they managed to pull themselves up. Better managed company. Good for them. Had they needed assistance to survive, they would have received it all the same. There was just no way to let all the automobile jobs disappear. Like it or not, the alternative to the assistance provided was not viable.

It's also worth noting that the jobs and livelihoods in jeopardy were by no means only the ones at GM and Chrysler. The entire supply chain of manufacturers and part suppliers, and the dealer networks, were all on the line. The effect was by no means localized to Michigan/Indiana/Ohio/Ontario. The effects would have spanned the entire continent and hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of jobs directly on the line had GM & Chrysler simply stopped manufacturing and gone into liquidation proceedings.

Exactly. Not sure why people complain about the government not getting employment back on track while also complaining about any initiative the government has taken to keep as many people as possible employed and preserving a crucial economic sector of this nation.

Figuring they really borrowed close to $60 billion 'technically' I hardly call this exciting...

Of course, people with no understanding of what they really did here, will lap it up for what it's worth.

Yes, GM should have sent that $8 billion dollars to the Emperor of Japan just like TOY-ota and Hon-Duh buyers do. People with no understanding of how the economy works will continue to buy foreign-made cars and complain when taxes go up and service levels go down.

Stick to Toyota loving.

Damn right!!!!!
