Democrats opened a new round of gleeful attacks as Sue Lowden, the Republican front-runner to unseat Sen. Harry Reid, again extolled the virtues of "bartering" for health care.

Lowden was recently the subject of late-night humor after saying health care costs would be lowered if health consumers paid with cash and bargained down prices with health providers. She called it "bartering," a term normally referring to a trade of one good or service for another.

Lowden defended her remarks Monday on the "Nevada Newsmakers" TV show.

"You know, before we all started having health care, in the olden days our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor, they would say I’ll paint your house," she said.

What's so wrong with a barter system?

OH WAIT! THAT'S RIGHT! The government hates it because they are greedy fucks who won't get tax dollars.

My bad.

I wonder if I can offload some of my baby guppies in exchange for antibiotics. Cuz they've been breeding like crazy. Perhaps I'll take my fishbowl into Walgreens and see how I do.

The government does not hate bartering and there's nothing wrong with it. It's legal and a valid part of our economy.

However, it is taxable, and the IRS will go after cheats.

IRS website:

Bartering Income

Bartering is the trading of one product or service for another. Usually there is no exchange of cash. It is the most ancient form of commerce. Any business owner or professional who has a product or service to offer can barter.

While our ancestors may have exchanged eggs for corn, today you can barter computer services for auto repair. Another example of a one-on-one, non-barter exchange transaction is a plumber doing repair work for a dentist in exchange for dental services. The fair market value of the goods and services exchanged must be reported as income by both parties.

Barter may take place on an informal one-on-one basis between individuals and businesses, or it can take place on a third party basis through a modern barter exchange company.

Tax Responsibilities

Income from bartering is taxable in the year it is performed. The rules for reporting barter transactions may vary depending on which form of bartering takes place. Refer to Tax Responsibilities of Bartering Participants for more information about reporting income and staying in compliance.

Chicken for medical services, eh? Gotta get a truck to haul them 1000 chickens to the ER along with the patient, then.

Maybe they'd settle for a chicken in black.

Maybe we should all send a chicken to the aspiring Senator as a campaign contribution. Who knows, maybe she can barter them chickens with the TV networks for airtime for her campaign ads. You know, just looking for ways to keep down the cost of election campaigns and giving her a chance to validate her theory.
