depending on service center and the priorities that the service center has at the time of application, could be 2 - 6+ months (or longer in some cases)

Nik's EAD and AP arrived more than a month before the green card. AP is especially worth it, because even if it's not arrived yet, if you file for it you can expedite processing in the case of a need for emergency travel. (You can also file late, but it's less hassle if you filed at the beginning)

The fees for them are waived with the AOS in process, and the forms are relatively simple, so there is absolutely NO DOWNSIDE to applying.

Exactly. Is the ability to travel, work, and have a recently-issued government identification (likely the first with your new name on it) worth 0 dollars and 00 cents? Pretty obvious to me what the answer to that one is.
