US Government & FDA To Dictate What You Can Eat!

It's a bizarre mentality and attitude certain groups have here. Where clearly profits are allowed to be put ahead of Americans. Strangely enough the people who claim to eat healthy and responsibly, thus no need for the government, happen to live in states with a large percentage of obese people.

Anyone who wants to know what is going on with food here needs to watch Food Inc. That illustrates exactly what food has become in this country, with no regard to the quality of the food or the treatment of the livestock.

Or read a Michael Pollan book.

Have you ever seen the show Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution? It's quite scary to see how ingrained this warped perception (or lack thereof) of food and nutrition is.

Last week, my husband & I spent about 45 mins in our local grocery store trying to find HCFS free salad dressing. I think we found about 2 brands out of 100's which was HCFS free. I dont understand why Americans like their food sweet. Even bread here has HCFS :dead:

I don't think it's that people like it, so much as that's what they're used to.

Also seems to go off quicker, from what I've seen. Lucky to find a loaf that isn't mouldy after buying it from fresh 3 days before.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There's 'good' regulation and there's 'bad' regulation.

The whole premise here is based on costs of health care. You're going to see a whole lot more of ####### like this in the 'name' of health care. It reminds me of the story out of the UK awhile back where a guy was told if he wanted surgery or wanted additional medical care, he would have to quit smoking. Otherwise they wouldn't treat him.... It's type like that. I can just see it now one day where you're told if you don't eat less salt, we're going to refuse to treat you because you cost too much. Screw that type of mentality.

It's not about it being 'healthier' or better. Which is ultimately arguable anyway based on a variety of lifestyle choices, genetics, etc.

Also don't get me this ####### about no 'choices' for eating healthy if you're poor. I've done this test myself on super tight budgets and actually got by pretty well with healthy eating. Granted I pay attention to ####### like that anyway and understand it. So maybe education is the key that is lacking for some here and not the options presented.

This is one of those instances where I'd be cool with maybe an FDA warning for "High Salt Content" if anything. Regulating salt levels down, forcing recipe changes, etc. is just plain wrong though. There are low sodium options, no sodium options, etc. out there now. Labeling is a better fix to point these things out more than anything. Don't change what works fine. Just educate people better on what is what.

We dont need as much salt in our food in order to taste it. However, most Americans are accustomed to a high salt content, and cannot taste it unless the food contains a high salt content.

Once companies reduce the salt content in food, there will be a several week period where food might taste a bit more bland, but after those few weeks, everything will be back to normal as you become accustomed to a lower salt content.

I already eat a low salt content in foods and it's a nice treat to eat 'saltier' foods from time to time. Yes, there is an inherent flavor differencce no matter how you put it. I can also tell foods that are extremely over salted. I have a very sensitive palette that breaks things down pretty easily, so certain things will bother me...

Let's face it Paul, you want manufacturers to be able to produce food that kills people in order to cull the 'stupid' part of the population.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There are already plenty of low sodium content foods out there.

Also, it's not the job of the government to dictate what I can/cannot put into my body. Yeah, sure they do in some ways now, but to force change in the way products are made already is absurd. There's already too much ####### that's kept off the market as it is due to the ##### society we live in when it comes to certain foods and how they effect us.

....

They do not tell you any such thing! They only tell the manufacturer how much they can use in their processing. Massive difference....

I suppose you also support legalization of marijuana, heron, cocaine.....

Do you have a Trader Joe's in your area? They have an awesome selection of salad dressings - many of them are in chilled section of the produce. :)

Yes, TJ's is great, but salad dressing is very easy to make yourself and then you can have complete control of what goes in it. TJ's has some excellent vinegars, like their orange/champagne which you can make yummy dressings with with little to no effort at all.

I would love to cull the stupid, but the bastards just wouldn't die. They get fatter

and fatter and what's worse, they breed, producing even stupider offspring.
