Hi to all!

We just got married today! I have a very quick question...

Is a certified true copy of marriage license, the same with marriage certificate? We are confused because we paid for an extra amount to have our marriage certificate immediately... but we have are two copies of certified true copy of marriage license...

If they are not the same, can we use this certified true copy of marriage license when applying for AOS?

Thanks alot.

marriage license is paper you need in order to get married...marriage certificate is given to you after your marriage so its different!!! marriage certificate is the one you will get in NSO if youre husband is filing for CR1 for your petition...you need to get CERTIFIED TRUE COPY OF MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE make sure you have at least 3 copies in case you need it in future...

congratulation!!

The Marriage License is the authorization to get married.

The Marriage Certificate is the receipt or proof of being married.

Which one do you think USCIS wants when they say to send in proof of being married?

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

You do NOT need a certified copy. You should send a photocopy of a certified copy of the Marriage Certificate. Never send originals to USCIS unless they need to be signed or notarized.

If they doubt the authenticity of one of your photocopies of a certified original, they will request to see the original, perhaps at the interview.

When applying for AOS, send a COPY of your marriage certificate, not your marriage license.

Thanks everyone for the prompt reply! Much appreciated! :)

I'd like to clarify. Yes we have the marriage license, but there is also another sheet which has the signature of the judge who officiated as well as the date of our marriage. Is this the document we are going to send for AOS? They told us that we will get the original copy in six weeks, but what we have for now is a certified true copy of the marriage license and then another sheet with the judge's name and signature and date of our marriage.

Thank you ver much.

Apparently, the great state of Texas refers to the actual proof of marriage as a "Marriage License". This is contrary to most states, where the marriage license is just the permission from the state to get married, and the way in which they extract their fee.

It sounds like your other document might be the Marriage Verification Letter. If I were you, I would play it safe and send copies of both papers.

Our marriage certificate is the signed marriage license.

They keep the original with the original signatures (on the fancy paper) in the office, and the "certified copy" they gave me was a photo copy of the marriage license (with all our signatures completed after the wedding) with the raised seal stating it was a true copy of what was in the records.

I can understand your confusion. I thought that surely we would get something that looks NICE for the $26 we paid for it!!!!!

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

Big thanks to everyone for the reply.

I guess the Certified Copy of the Marriage License we have, with an attached document stating the name of the JP who officiated and the date of our marriage is our Marriage Certificate. Hubby tells me that it will be the one we will send for AOS.

Godbless us all.

That's true. We just got the signed "marriage license" when we got married here in Texas.

Marriage License is the document allowing you to get married.

Marriage Certificate is the proof that the marriage actually took place.

Documents need to be certified for them to be considered official.

You said that you have two documents with you. One is the certified copy of your Marriage License. The other document with the signatures and date of your marriage is most probably your Marriage Certificate. However, it cannot be considered the official proof of your marriage because it is not certified yet. To make it official, your wedding officiant would have to file your Marriage Certificate with your county clerk for recording and certification purposes (which I think he already did that is why he told you to wait for 6 weeks). I hope this makes sense.

Based on the guide, you need to send a certified copy of your Marriage Certificate(not the Marriage License) with your AOS application. I am not sure if it safe to submit a copy of the Marriage Certificate that has not been certified yet.

Thanks! finally i found some people here who also have the same situation as mine... I was confused, but knowing you also have the same situation as mine. I guess, marriage certificate/proof of marriage/etc in Texas is different from other states.

I have a question..

On the certified marriage license that we got, we do not have our signatures... and there is no part there where we can put our signatures.. What was there was the name and signature of the wedding officiant and the date. Is this the same as yours?

Thanks

Yes, there's no place for our signatures which I also found strange... The judge who officiated us didn't even ask our witnesses to sign on it. [it says there "Witness (optional)".] Anyway, I think Texas' marriage license is different from the rest.
