Do all police checks through CPIC go through Ottawa?

I was at our local police station today, asking about getting a police check done in the near future. They said I need to make an appointment with them there to get fingerprints done, then the prints are sent to Ottawa to check against the criminal database. We didn't speak at length because I was in a bit of a hurry, so I didn't ask if I send the prints or they do. Anybody know?

And do all Canada wide police checks go through Ottawa? Just wondering.

If you don't have a criminal record, then you don't need to get the full fingerprinted version done- just a simple national name check. The person at the police station must have been confused about what you needed.

Yes you just need the police certificate. It's called that and it's for immigration purposes. If you do have a record ie convictions, you'll need to get your fingerprints as noted by the previous poster.

Never got finger prints taken ( have no record at all ) took literally 5 min! I went into the police station in ottawa, they put my paper I filled out into a printer like machine, typed on a computer and then the printer machine spat out my paper with a stamp and seal on it stating no criminal record. Never gave fingerprints or sent anything anywhere.

Just to clarify, you may not receive a "police certificate." It depends on the police agency. With the RCMP, the methods of receiving your results vary throughout Canada and you should not be alarmed if you get a form that doesn't say "police certificate." I work for the RCMP so I'm not talking out of my butt. ;-)

They never did my "fingerprints". They just took my SIN number, and had me sign a little piece of paper. My "certificate" and I use that term VERY lightly arrived in the mail 3 weeks later. Some of my 3 year olds drawings looked more put together than that did. I was worried MTL was gonna be like "yeah, whatever".

So dont waste the money on the full fingerprint background check.

In Peel Region, you jsut fill out a form for a name check, and then they check a box at the bottom that says they check the CPIC and you're all clear and then they stamp and sign it. You don't even get an additional piece of paper, ha.

In Winnipeg, I just went to the City website, went to the police section and printed, filled out a form. Faxed it down with copies of my ideas with my credit card number. They charged it got it in a mail a few weeks later. Literally didn't have to go downtown or any of that #######..just used the fax machine at work! super convenient i'd try and see if your local police station offers that service because it was awesome.

Ok my situation is a strange one. I've lived all over Canada. I lived for four years in Saskatchewan in three different places and in Ontario like six different places. How could I possibly get police checks for all those places. I moved out when I was 16. Can't I just submit a RCMP Criminal Background check?. Or will they ask me what to submit!!

Exactly. One police check will cover everywhere you've lived in Canada. A Canada wide name check done from the RCMP will work just fine.
