Detroit police officer has been charged with larceny for allegedly bilking the city out of more than $15,000 by leaving work early for an overlapping moonlighting gig, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Jerome Collins, 49, faces up to five years in prison if convicted of a felony charge of larceny by false pretenses of more than $1,000.

Collins is accused of routinely leaving his police job early to work as a security guard at St. John’s Riverview Hospital on East Jefferson. Police Chief Warren Evans had announced an internal investigation against Collins — who had been suspended without pay pending the criminal investigation — for allegedly getting paid for working hours after he left his post.

“You would think that with the spotlight on corruption as it has been lately, that people, especially those in positions of trust, would stop thinking they can get away with this fraud and embezzlement,” Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement released today.

Collins is to be arraigned Tuesday in 36th District Court.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I was in Detroit a couple of months ago and while driving there was a truck driver that kept swerving his trailer and smacking vihicles. One of them went off the road and flipped. I got his info off the truck and trailer and pulled over to render what aid I could. The police showed up and took over and asked whose big truck it was and I said mine and he told me to get going. I told him OK but wanted to get the info from the truck and my name and my name and number as a witness. He told to get moving and NOW. I again tried to get him the info by going to my truck and writing it down and then went and tried to give it to him and he said that he didn't care about that stuff and I better be gone in one minute or I would be arrested. I left and hoped that the people were OK.

That cop must have been too hurried to take your witness statement...he was probably late to his moonlighting job

I like to think crash helmets should be worn when adventuring out into the city.

Felony charge?

Its a bit like the military.....as a soldier if you injure yourself on leave you can be charged with destruction of government property if you can not fulfill your duties.
