Even though people would be tempted to

blame him or other Democrats who allowed

or promoted the proliferation of sub-prime

mortgage scams, I didn't see it as fair.

Lack of proper government oversight may

have had a role, but I would hesitate to

select that as the main cause for blame.

There will be plenty of opportunity to blame

him in the future, as there has been with

all the preceeding administrations.

They made their contribution to the mess.

If they decided to remain renters then the flood of bogus mortgage-backed securities

would not have toppled Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch who pretty

much got what they deserved.

A con game can't succeed without the greed of the victim playing a role.

Perhaps the most blame is due to the fly-by-nite mortgage brokers

who the government allowed to work totally outside the parameters

of normal banking regulations. All the conventional financial institutions

jumped on the bandwagon because they were also greedy and for years

there was much money to be made, until the trend of ever increasing

home prices started to reverse.

Real estate brokers also had a role.

The more "value" they create (real or imaginary),

the higher their commissions go.

Wouldn't it be interesting if they were paid by the sale

instead of by a percentage of the value of the property?

As I guessed, there's more than enough blame to go around no matter what your politics are.

Just an observation after almost 20 responses - the answers indicate that the blame is on US,

as a country individually and collectively rather than on forces outside our borders.

The real blame... the economy is cyclical. All that can be done is delay and lessen the blow.
