I864 joint sponsor question

Ok so my situation is this. I am a divorced father of 3 and I just recently got married to a woman from Colombia, and she has one child also. So i am going over the I864 affidavite of support and it looks like I have to state my household size as 6 and that my income must be at 36,912. This is where the questions start. I came in at just under that number by 1400. I don't have any assets to use to bridge the gap. Now to the question.

I have a family memeber that lives in the same residence as I do, could I just add them to my household on the I864 form along with their income to make the 125%? The other option I have is my parents doing a joint sponsor. Being that they have no minor children in their household anymore, would they just have to meet the 4 person level(themselves and my wife and her son)on the I864 form?

If you use a CO-SPONSOR, you (the petitioner) combine your income to the co-sponsor's to meet the requirements. If you use a JOINT SPONSOR, the person has to meet the requirements by him/herself without combining with your income. And remember, for a CO-SPONSOR you (the petitioner) have to file the I-864 and the co-sponsor has to file the I-864A (Contract between sponsor and household member). For a JOINT SPONSOR you both file the I-864.

Thank you for that answer. I think I have it covered either way, but wanted to make sure I do it correctly.

You must also address the other sponsor's household size. If using the I-864, they count your spouse and step-child, themselves and any spouse or dependents but not you or your children. If using the I864a, they add themselves and any of their dependents to the six in your household and so do you.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
