Hi! My husband and I are scheduled to go on a cruise a week after his conditional green card expires and I am assuming the way things move at a snail's pace at VSC, that we won't have his permanent green card by then.

Will we have any problems with people not understanding that his expired green card and NOA that extends his green card for one year is enough to travel in and out of the country?

I see that some people get a stamp, a I-155, I think. Would it be better if he had the stamp as well?

Thanks for your help!

We just went to Cancun on vacation last week. I brought my NOA1, expired GC and passport. The worst part was convincing the girl at ticketing here in the U.S the NOA1 was an extension of my expired GC but once she asked her supervisor we were fine. Other than that we had no issues. I don't think the officer at Immigrations even noticed my GC was expired until he saw the NOA, then he stamped my passport and said "Welcome Home". :D Make sure you bring the original NOA because they did put it under some kind of special light to make sure it was genuine.

No worries. Enjoy your cruise. The first sentence of the NOA says your status has been extended for 1 year and you are allowed to TRAVEL and WORK. So no one at the POE should challenge that. You could try getting a stamp but they will not give it to you since you have the NOA.

The NOA1 extends the duration of the Green Card. Thus, you are not traveling with an expired Green Card. Any CBP officer swiping your Green Card will read the extended "valid 'til" date on his or her screen.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

OUR NOA letter doesn't have a valid until date, it just says extended one year and the date the NOA was issued.

You know, my dad is from Sweden (my mom from Germany, my grandfather from Denmark) and I think very highly of Sweden and its people. Therefore let me answer this quickly without causing too much attention.

The NOA1 letter extends your Green Card for one year. Thus, your Green Card's new expiration date will be exactly 1 year after its previous expiration date, on the same day, just one year later. That will be exactly 364 days later, unless the date is February 29.

Now try to figure that one out.

Huh??? The NOA says your residency has been extended for a year so it expires on what ever date your green Card expires. If for example your current conditional card expires 10/10/2010 the NOA makes the expiration 10/10/2011.

You might want to take a couple of photocopies of your NOA in addition to the original NOA. When I traveled through Tanzania and Qatar, I had to explain multiple times what the NOA meant to the local airline agents. They made copies just to be safe. If you carry an extra copy or two, it'll save you some time.
