I imagine some are just followers and others have an anger inside which blames others for -whatever reason.

If these were White mobs it would be called "racist attacks" lashing out at minorities for -template reasons.

Pounding on old people and women with Glee is alarming, the Sheer numbers just add to that.

There's a subculture that has evolved in the inner city that celebrates this sort of thing. Twitter is facilitating. 10 years ago, the suburbs were safe because we were over-policed and you couldn't have a large congregation of undesirables (read, inner city yoot) without them noticing and dispersing before it became a threat. Today, with Twitter, it all happens in an instant and LE finds itself overwhelmed.

The one good thing about my suburb is that we don't have a downtown section nor anywhere that would count as 'walkable'. This makes us less attractive a target than the towns that have given in to the European model and have spent money building out walkable 'downtown' areas. They are now targets of the Newark trashy types.

I remember flying into Newark on a Continental feeder jet one time. We were delayed and there was a stiff crosswind. We touched down a little hard and once we turned off onto the taxiway, the flight attendant let us know out gate was still blocked.

Then she said, "The crew and I would like to welcome you to Liberty International Airport, in our wonderful hometown of Newark." When half the passengers started laughing, she added, "Well now I know which of you live here!"

Not been to Nurk in a while, but I guess things haven't improved much.

Do you think her attacker asked before hand if she was a liberal? And only after she confirmed she was attacked?

It's unfortunate that these things are becoming more prevalent. I do believe that one way to stop this is to focus on the kids and try to appeal to the 'weaker' ones.

Appealing to the compassion of mob like this is going to happen. In Atlanta, they banned Freaknic a decade ago because the crowd couldn't behave and traffic was a mess. Then you've got sports fans, spring breakers and rock concerts goers who act like jerks when they reach critical mass.

I have never suggested the girl contributed to to the attack in any way, I and others only marvel at her response, after the fact.

Not been to Nurk in a while, but I guess things haven't improved much.

To the contrary, Newark has improved a lot. But there's still a very large and angry (and mostly black) underclass. The brave people who teach in the Newark school district (both public and charter) can attest to this fact. They're largely a bunch of sociopaths and their groupies, kids who get off on hurting and terrorizing others. And in the ultimate sign of our times, they're all connected, all the time, and Twitter is enabling their activities in a way past technologies simply could not.

Put another way, it's a whole new world out here. The usual standards and practices no longer apply. South Orange PD has actually added to staff (at a time when NJ police departments are strapped for cash) and created a position dedicated to the monitoring of social media networks. The new staff member will learn the shorthand (for example, these kids refer to South Orange downtown as "da ville") and monitor all communications in the hope of being prepared for the next flash mob.
