My second son is the product of my switch from BC from Canada to US. In Canada I took the same 21 day BC pills for over 10 years. When I started at my Dr in the US he found the "equivelent" to my Canadian BC. So I continued on taking the pills as I had for years - take a pill everyday and have 7 days off and start a new pack on the Sunday. Well, took me probaby 3-4 months of funny cylces until it dawned on me the new pills were 28 day pills not 21 day. So after taking a month off the pills all together to get my cycle back to normal I found myself to be pregnant. This wasn't a bad thing for us as we were planning on having another baby just not planning on that time. But it was all good. My husband did complain that he did missed out on the "trying to get pregnant" process. LOL.

So, if your really not wanting a baby at this time just make sure your "covered" until you get set up with new BC.

Sorry. I got a chuckle out of that. Who would've thought? lol

Yah, I've never been upset about it and laugh at it too. Total user error on my part. We were going to try for another baby anyways in 6 or so months so it wasn't a big deal to us and a pleasant surprise.

I'd also try planned parenthood if you are set on the pill... otherwise, I might just use condoms for awhile until I got insurance.

Just remember that some guys can't / won't use condoms for personal reasons. *cough*

Hi Ashenflowers,

I can relate to your situation, as (gee, I hate to be personal here) years ago I experienced a similar situation before too. I only had planned a vacation here in the USA (see my VJ timeline about this), and only had about 2 weeks worth of pills and other personal belongings when I came here. On top of that, I was "out of status" while the paperwork was processing for the AOS, so I could not go back to pick up my stuff myself even if I wanted to. Also, because of my "in limbo" immigration status, I had no health insurance nor could get any kind of health insurance here either. Luckily though, I had stocked up on pills ahead of time (intuition perhaps?), and as soon as I ran out of my pills, said to my husband: "Well, you're either going to have pick up my pills for me, or we're going to have a baby now!" And shortly afterwards, my husband drove all the way by himself to Canada to my former place and picked up most of my stuff. It was funny though, when he returned, and had the many packets of pills stuffed in his pocket, as he was afraid they would find it in the trunk of the car if they ever did search there (which thank goodness they didn't this time, like they did before when I arrived here). Even after that, it took some time for me to get healthcare after I got my green card. And so, I ended up paying a lot for all of my "uninsured healthcare" here in the USA, until I finally got some sort of medical insurance coverage awhile later.

Lol...oh the stories of our newlywed married days! Thank goodness we don't have to worry about pills (we finally gave up on that idea, as we've been married for awhile and decided that we want to do the opposite and expand our family with a baby/child instead). I'm thankful too that I have healthcare now here in the USA, even though it's not the best, and it can be extremely frustrating at times trying to work through the system here.

If you still can travel back to Canada and get healthcare and pills there, then I would suggest you do that. It's better if you can bring the pills and other medications over in-person yourself. It's ok to do, as long as you have a valid prescription accompanying it. Do not send it by mail, as it will get taken away and/or lost, and you might end up in a lot of trouble because of it.

If you can't get your pills from Canada, as the other posters above suggested, then try to find a free and/or low cost healthcare clinic here in the USA for your medical needs. For example, planned parenthood, your local county public health clinic, directly from a doctor/clinic, etc. And as soon as you can, yes, do find some sort of medical insurance here in the USA, as medical costs here in the USA can get quite costly and can be very difficult to obtain without insurance....

As for natural family planning...It might or might not work for you. If you have a regular/normal cycle, and if you use natural family planning correctly, then it could work. However, if you have irregular cycles, and are inaccurate in your use of natural family planning, then it could backfire....

So in my opinion, it is always best to have a "backup plan", just in case.....

Remember that a baby/child is a big responsibility (lol..trust me, I'm speaking from personal experience here). And if you are not ready to have such at this point in your life, then it is best that you 'plan' ahead of time in terms of contraception options, instead..

Hope this helps. Good luck with your medical and immigration situations too.

Ant

So... normally I wouldn't write on the interwebs about something like this, but I'm really kind of concerned about it. Of course, I never would be in Canada.

I'm running out of birth control. I brought a few months worth from Canada, thinking it would hold me over and I'd have time to figure out how to get more here. Well, that was before my husband lost his job and health insurance coverage (thanks Sam for the other thread that reminded me I've been meaning to ask about this... lol) and still haven't been able to find either 3 months later. Now, I'm almost out.

I know, from the recent post here, that Canadian prescriptions can't be transferred to the U.S. I always just went to the clinic in London, and got them directly there anyway. My prescription is now up, so I don't even know if I can get them to send me more (or if they even would), since a) they're not technically a 'pharmacy' in the same way that, say, Shoppers Drug Mart is... and b) I'm due for an exam, and they probably won't take 'I'm in the U.S. with no insurance' as an excuse, cause they'd have to write me a new prescription. lol I didn't have a family doctor anymore in Canada either.

So, bottom line, anyone have any good ideas on how I could get more? And if not, has anyone tried the 'natural family planning'?

Further Bottom Line. I DON'T WANT KIDS right now. I'd seriously be devastated if I found out I was pregnant. Like... worse than a 16 yr old finding out after prom night.

I'm not kidding. I don't want this to turn into a 'oh kids aren't that bad'... lol... I just had to say that. I need to know how to find birth control here.

(sorry... after a smidge more looking I found out it's somewhat being discussed in the baby thread? I haven't really been following that thread, since I don't find it relevant to childless-me, but I will have a look there :))

I got the "won't" but I'm not sure I get the "can't"

But... maybe I really don't want the answer to that question.

I got the "won't" but I'm not sure I get the "can't"

But... maybe I really don't want the answer to that question.

Some guys aren't able to maintain erection once a condom is on. Typically psychological, but also sometimes they lack so much sensation already (from injury or other reasons) that the condom makes it feel like nothing

Some are "too big" and finding the "extra large" ones can be sometimes quite difficult

Some excrete too much semen (or too high pressure release) and end up "spilling over".. thus defeating the purpose of the condom

Some are "too little" where regular condoms don't fit and can you imagine his pride if it was suggested he try looking for "small" ones?

Some are allergic to latex, so you need to locate the lambskin or other kinds (which is also very hard to do)

Myriad of reasons... most are "don't want to" rather than "can't" though.

Yeah. Not to get too personal, but I fall under three of the above categories, which basically means that it's birth control or nothing. Trust that I know how inconvenient it is for my wife, given the downsides to birth control pills, but in our case (and many others -- more than you might expect) it's really the path of least resistance.

Lol..Since when did a conversation about birth control pills turn into a conversation about condoms?....

But then again, condoms are a means of birth control...So I guess it's the same thing......

Ok...This is my viewpoint (from a female prespective, believe it or not...)....

Sorry to get too personal here too...

I actually agree with Wyatt about this one...."It's birth control or nothing", here too.........

Sure it's an inconvenience on my end, but whatever it takes....

More of a female preference too, really..Just a thought....;)

The bottom line: Regardless of what form of birth control you/your partner uses, as long as you are both comfortable with it, use it properly, and the birth control does the job, then so be it...Whatever works, I suppose...;)

Same (as in they are both birth control options) but different (used differently, used by opposite genders)....Whatever works, nevertheless...;)

Canadiandggal-Sorry to hear about your situation...:(

Hmm...I'm sure there is something out there, if ever you both need birth control...

You can also talk to your doctor/health care provider about this, as they can offer other options there too...

Maybe you can try the natural family planning option as well?

It's better to have some form of birth control that works for the both of you, than to have none at all...

Don't take the risk, when you don't have to.....
