51% in New Jersey Favor Repeal of Health Care Bill

Fifty-one percent (51%) of voters in New Jersey, a state Barack Obama carried handily in 2008, now favor repeal of the recently-passed national health care bill. That includes 41% who strongly favor repeal.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the Garden State finds that 45% oppose repeal of the health care plan, with 38% who strongly oppose it.

Support for repeal is lower in New Jersey than it is nationally. Three weeks after passage of the health care bill, 58% of voters nationwide favor its repeal.

Forty-two percent (42%) of New Jersey voters think the health care plan will be good for the country, while slightly more (47%) predict that its impact will be bad.

But voters also are closely divided over whether New Jersey should join the other states that are sung the federal government to stop the health care plan, challenging the constitutionality of its requirement that all Americans buy or obtain health insurance. Forty-five percent (45%) favor such a lawsuit, while 43% are opposed. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of male voters think the state join sue the government over the plan, compared to just 40% of women.

Most Republicans (72%) and voters not affiliated with either major party (58%) support such a suit. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of Democrats oppose it.

As for repeal of the health care bill, 79% of New Jersey Republicans and 60% of unaffiliateds think it’s a good idea. Seventy percent (70%) of Democrats in the state oppose repeal.

But then 71% of Democrats believe the plan is good for the country. Eighty-one percent (81%) of Republicans and 56% of unaffiliated voters think otherwise.
