Chirac now says France could nuke a state that was merely "considering" the deployment of WMD...

Fischkoepfin,

Agreed with the opening "Unjustified.", but your comparison with the Netherlands is also unjustified. A glance at a map shows that resolve can't overcome size and geography.

Yodrak

Unjustifiedly. The French lost 500.000 soldiers defending France against the Germans; there are other nations, e.g. the Netherlands, that put up much less resistance (invasion of NL took only 3 days) and that were much more willing to cooperate.

Yodrak,

you're right. When it comes to size and area the Netherlands are smaller, and of course it would take less time than invading France. The Netherlands relied on the fact that Germany did not attack them in WW1, and where neither well-armed nor allied at the time. Nevertheless, the population cooperated with the Nazis to a higher extent even though there was a resistance movement, too.

Violence, ugliness and stupidity are human universals, I am afraid. The French and Americans do not have a monopoly. I wonder what Germany does in its spare time, now that invading another country is no longer in fashion? (or I thought it was :hehe::lol: ) I have nothing against the Germans, by the way, they make great cars and great beers. Is Heineken Dutch or German?

Had Chirac drunk too much Perrier? He should switch to Heineken. Personally, I oppose war and prefer a world of peace and cooperation, non-military of course. Maybe my next move will be to settle in Switzerland (very low taxes I heard? But immigration laws there make it is difficult).

Assuming you're replying to my point about Chirac, I can tell you what Germany does: wait for the economic upturn while dismantling the economy! The chancelorette is scoring points abroad while ignoring problems at home. The interior minister is hellbend on using the German army against civilians during big events, and the defense minister is busy preventing that so that more German troops can serve in Afghanistan and Kosovo just to make sure that NATO stays happy. Meanwhile, the agricultural minister tries to turn back agricultural reforms aimed to make agricultural production ecologically sound. And it's possible to continue this list since there's lots of stuff that is going completely wrong over here.

I have nothing against France or the US or any other country in the world or their populations, but I have an issue with blind nationalism, environmental destruction, warfare, etc. For that reason, I think most politicians comletely fail when it comes to doing their job, which is to represent the people and not industrial, military, or agricultural interests. They pander to populist ideas just to get elected and then they're back to doing nothing in the interest of their voters except pass some law that makes their voters feel something is happening, immigration reform is a true biggy in this field as are fake or incomplete health reforms.

To go back to Jacques, at least France has signed the NPT ("Nuclear Proliferation Treaty" or "Unclear Proliferation Treaty")

I worry more about Teheran or Pyongyang. North Korea has withdrawn from the NPT and has thumbed its nose at everyone by telling the world it has nuclear weapons.

I also worry about the Bushies playing with new toys (look at what happened to that Texan lawyer last week). Robert McNamara, the Vietnam-era US defense secretary, wrote in the current edition of Foreign Policy magazine: "I would characterize current US nuclear weapons policy as immoral, illegal, militarily unnecessary and dreadfully dangerous."

McNamera is spot-on.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, all it's going to take is a conference call (South Park style) between Kim Jong-Il, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and everyone's favorite terrorist... Osama Bin Laden.
