French President Jacques Chirac last week announced a shift in the country's nuclear deterrence doctrine, enlarging the concept of "vital interests" that French nuclear weapons are designed to protect areas potentially far beyond French borders. He also indicated that nuclear arms might be used in more focused attacks and not only for total destruction.

He also said France's "force de frappe" (nuclear strike force) could be used against states that were "considering" deploying weapons of mass destruction. Chirac did not go further?by design, the doctrine is not precise on what would trigger French use of nuclear weapons ?but observers saw in that statement a reference to the ongoing crisis over Iran's nuclear program.

Chirac is insane! And he has been that way ever since he took office in the 1990s.

The French have one of the largest nuclear arsenals and unlike other nuclear nations they have been busy testing their nukes, redesigning their rocket systems, and increasing their warheads.

Never underestimate those Frenchies... ;)

Good for them, if true. They've lived with the cheese-eating-surrender-monkey stigma due to their collaboration with the Nazis long enough...

Unjustifiedly. The French lost 500.000 soldiers defending France against the Germans; there are other nations, e.g. the Netherlands, that put up much less resistance (invasion of NL took only 3 days) and that were much more willing to cooperate.

Viva La France! Lest we forget in the latter part of the 1700s that if it wasn't for the French Navy and a couple of mean drill instructors, we'd all be carrying SA-80s in Her Majesty's Service and not carrying squat at home! (And saying things like "bloody" and measuring everything in meters and grams.)

Also, I applaud Chirac's decision to use this type of language on deploying WMDs. I mean after all, our own president decided it was OK to send 150,000+ troops into a sovereign country simply on the "threat" of WMD. I would assume a tactical cruise missile strike, even if nuclear, is preferable to 150,000+ armed foreign men (who don't even speak your language) occupying your cities. I don't know though..... maybe that's just me.

I'm willing to bet money though that if France does this (with or without Security Council approval) that the US would be the first one's knocking on Chirac's door with their own tactical (but non-nuclear) missile strike. ####### hypocrites.

Maybe this will finally get the French the respect they deserve.

 Yep! Rest of world (ROW) uses words like "bloody" and measures things in meters and grams. They also use the . instead of the , and several other little things that we "Yanks" don't know squat about because the French saved our @$$#$ in the late 1770's.

Interesting.

So if I wrote, in the US, "500.010", in Germany that would be "500,010" ?

Amazing. Good thing Hitler lost WW2, I don't think I'd have been able to get the hang of this.
