I'm also not telling the others to not give their opinions. Seems that it's always the happy rainbow crowd who wants the other side to not be allowed to speak, or to jump on them if they do give their opinion. Sorry....life isn't always nice. If I think someone is doing something nasty - like marrying someone for money or a visa - I'm gonna bloody say so. If I'm wrong, I'll apologize.

I am going to try my best here and play devils advocate. On the side of the OP, ok so she just met him and is now asking for advice on whether or not she should be getting suppport. Does that necessarily mean that she is a gold digger? No. None of us have actually been there when they first met or were even present when they met online. No one exactly knows.

On the opposite side of the coin, yes it does seem strange that she is asking for support so soon after meeting and becoming engaged. Yes, I would much rather be giving advice to someone who may not be such a high risk of being fraud.

With all that being said, I do think that ppl do tend to jump to conclusions without getting to know someone. Remember, the internet can be funny sometimes. You may say one thing, but because it is via the internet it may easily get misconstrued. How many of us have been on msn, yahoo, aim, or any other messaging service with our SO's or perhaps a friend, and what we said to them may make sense to us, but in actuality, they take it the other way around? Perhaps the OP of this thread has not fully explained or has been clear. I am not taking anyones side here, I am just trying to look at it from all angles.

Some of you may remember one of my early threads and how I got flamed BIG time because of the way I worded an email to my senator. I got accused of being ignorant, racist...etc. It wasn't until I privately pm'ed two ppl and explained myself better that ppl started to understand that I wasn't the sort of person they first took me as. At the end of the day I still found it hurtful because of instead of trying to understand me better, I was verbally attacked.

Yes, I do agree that life isn't about sugar and spice and everything nice. Yes, I would rather have ppl be honest with me then to try and make things "fluffy" for me, but I do believe in tact and a more responsible approach. Sometimes it seems to me that when flaming begins it turns into a battle of who can be more witty and clever then the next.

Again, these are just my opinions and how I see things. It isn't meant to start a war or to make anyone angry here.

Excellent example John. Both of the replies fit the statement, however if you were to post reply 2, you are told you are disrespectful and unsupportive? In that particular example I would give that same kind of advice to a close friend, why should a treat a complete stranger any different?

Your style of vernacular and choice of words would be no different when talking to a friend vs. a stranger (in this case someone from another country)? A friend understands you, knows your style and where you are coming from. I don't think any of us here actually talk to a stranger in the same way we do to our friends. So often (and here on VJ is a perfect example), people misunderstand each other. It behooves us to keep that in mind when we are reading what they say - that perhaps the way you understand it isn't the way they meant it.

Aye, but Steven, this is a US based message board, written in English, for people trying to get visas to come to the UNITED STATES. Sooner or later, they will have to understand the way Americans are, and how English is spoken. It is not for me to understand what everyone from every other country means since I am not trying to go to their country.

Stranger or not... my advice is my advice, my opinion is my opinion. I don't tailor it for diffent people or different countries.
