If there was a rumor that Ellen Degeneres was straight, nobody is going to "defend" her name, because there is no need to. By the very nature of the word "Defend", it implies somehow that being gay is wrong. If someone accused me of being gay, I don't need to have my name or honor defended. That is their choice to be ignorant of the facts.

Put another way, why is your 'name and reputation' in some kind of jeopardy if someone suggests you might be gay whether or not the suggestion is based in truth or fiction? There should be no reason to get upset simply because of that.

Fine. I don't understand, I am just a dumb Christian.

What's that for? No one is suggesting you are stupid because you are a christian. I am simply trying to make you see that feeling the need to 'defend your name' against the slur of lesbianism is in and of itself wrong. Being a lesbian is not a slur on anyone's character and should not be treated as if it were.

It's not annoying that people defended her from what seemed to be people labeling her gay with no proof at that time to back it up. So because of that, people were defending her against what were considered pure speculation. If people started rumors that I was gay, and I wasn't, I wouldn't mind people defending my name. Her fans were not going to just believe an online rumor about it if she had not said it was true herself. This has been going on for years with people speculating on every side.

She might have been grappling with it (her sexual identity) for a long time, especially given her strong religious beliefs.

In the Christian music world, it would make a difference. I know our little closed minded Christian world is different than your open minded do whatever you want worlds.

My world is not 'do whatever I want'. Have some respect for other people if you wish to be treated with respect yourself. Atheists and agnostics are perfectly capable of having very sophisticated moral compasses.

I agree. Especially if many of the venues she performed at were sponsored by various churches or organizations. To come out and say you're gay would have shut the door for her musically...at least as a Christian musician.

If you listened to her music, were a fan of hers, read her lyrics of past hits, you as a Christian fan would defend her against such rumors that would go against what she seemed she had stood for before. Whether she had her own struggle to admit it, I am sure she did and I don't know when it started. People do change, I know. But the rumors have been going on for years with her being silent on them until now.

I don't feel respect from you on here most of the time. Saying things like 'you don't seem to understand" and other similar phrases in various discussions on here for a long time doesn't feel very respectful to my intelligence. Maybe you don't even realize you do it, but you are often condescending.

Such rumours should not need defending. Are you seriously suggesting that you personally can't see her as a valid christian musician unless she's straight?

If people accused me of being gay, I would laugh and say nothing. It's no one's business, and I'm not going to defend rumours, especially when it doesn't matter if they're true or not.

Christian Conservatives have really been grinding my gears lately. I've seen people on my Facebook list delete people for asking why they felt a need to preach all the time, and I've been personally blamed for the problems of the US because I like Obama's policies. I've been told that one day I'll see the light, and have people speculate on why I'm not a Christian anymore, even when I've told them the true reason. I've been told that as long as I believe in God, nothing else matters about my beliefs. This is just the direct impact that they've had on me, and I've also seen it around the country in the news and in protests. Still, I'm just an atheist that's going to Hell so what do I know. :)

I really don't have a problem with appearing to be condescending. You seem to think that's a personality flaw, I do not.

You don't seem to understand. What does it matter if someone is gay or straight that they need to be 'defended' if someone makes up rumours about who they are sleeping with? Seriously, don't you get how much of a double standard that is if you differentiate?

Christians dont find it acceptable to be gay. So yes they would feel the need to defend someone that has been accused of such a serious sin. The few that claim they can still be gay and a Christian are delusional and I often wonder if they ever even read the bible.

Lets clarify that - Fundamental Christians don't find it acceptable to be gay. There was a lesbian clergy in the Episcopalian who was recently promoted to bishop or some higher position. There are many Christian churches that accept gays. The Catholic Church allows gays to be ordained clergy provided they follow the tradition of celibacy as other ordained clergy do.
