lol yeah... read the thread (start from the END of the thread and read backwards... some information is outdated).

Also, check out the service canada website ( http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca ). It has tons of information about EI for people who live outside of Canada.

Can you?? On the cheques it says "not to be cashed outside of canada" at least thats what it said on my maternity EI cheques.... hmmm...

You won'tget away with it...as soon as you're not a resident (so the moth after you move)you are not entitled to it. The burden is on you to inform them and cancel CCTB and GST credit.

If you 'forget' to tell them, they'll figure it out anyway when you file your taxes and then they'll send you a bill.....I assumed wrongly that they'd figure it out after my first years taxes were filed, but no...they kept paying me....and then I had to pay it all back, which wasn't fun.

To the person asking about cheques being cashed outside Canada.....you wouldn't likely find a bank which could cash a Cdn cheque down here in the US...Direct Deposit is always better.

WHOLE thread on EI at the top. if ur a k1'er you wont get EI until you have the EAD--but you still apply right away!! If your a Cr-1/IR-1, your already "work authorized" thus you can get EI right away!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I'll have to look into this. I literally just got off the phone with Service Canada, and they told me as soon as I leave the country for more than 7 days, my EI is canceled. Maternity can be claimed and collected in the US, as long as you meet the requirements of a certain number of hours worked.

I called again, and got much better news this time around. Apparently I can collect the duration of my EI from the US as I am now able to work in the US. I can file against Canada from the US, as i've paid into it! Great stuff...money I thought I was going to have to just give up!!
