ceresa,

One of the three 1040s for sure, after that it depends on a lot of things associated with your personal financial situation.

Better to see a professional tax preparer than spill your financial guts on an internet discussion board.

Hi all

Can anyone help us with the basics of taxes? My husband has always done his taxes, but now we're married, and I also brought money with me from the UK - which forms do we need to fill in?

:help:

Hi Ceresa,

I am in a similar situation to you and we have decided to get a professional to help us sort this out; this year at least.

However, our 'professional' has already run into problems as the UK tax year is 6th April-5th April the following year and the US one is 1st January to 31st December.

Hopefully she will find some solution, in order that our incomes can be 'harmonised' for US tax filing purposes. It may be that my UK 'paychecks' covering the period 1st January to 31st December 2005 will have to be totalled, rather than using UK P60 figures.

I am still awaiting a definitive outcome on my initial enquiry to the professional.....from 3 weeks ago !

Anyone else know how this is normally handled?

Neil.

I believe the IRS actually has a number you can call for tax questions.

Yeh my husband has called an accountant too so we dont end up messing it up, but we're still waiting to hear from him so we were considering doing it ourselves, but I think now we will continue with the accountant.

By the way - any idea how much they generally cost to do your taxes? (im clueless on what price they could charge us)

This is confusing to me, never had to do any of my own taxes back in the UK! .... So what do I need for my end?

Hello again, Ceresa :)

Well I was quoted $150-200 total, though I am not at all sure whether this is 'normal'. It's H R Block, locally to where I live.

Hope this helps a little. Neil.
