NEW YORK — Consumer Reports has given the Lexus GX 460 SUV a rare "Don't Buy" warning, saying a problem that occurred during routine handling tests could lead to a rollover accident in real-world driving.

In the latest blow to Toyota's reputation, the magazine said that during a test of the vehicle's performance during unusual turns, the rear of the vehicle slid until it was nearly sideways before the electronic stability control system kicked in.

Consumer Reports said in real-world driving, such a scenario could cause a rollover accident. As a result, the magazine has given the seven-seat SUV a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" label until the problem is fixed.

All Heil Guberment Motors! We bow to thee.

This is such a piece of fluff and I can't even believe the media is putting this all over the place today.

Oh we "THINK" there's a problem here, but we've actually not heard of or seen a problem yet, but we "think" it could happen, so since we "think" that, then it's obviously not safe.

I haven't seen this all over the media as you put it. Take your tinfoil hat off for a minute paul and think. If you really think that the "gubmint" as you like to put it is really fabricating this about toyota and their subsidiaries, then you really have been missing something, probably your dosage of haldol.

Sorry, I call it being all over the media based on just those few main sources alone.

There's an agenda when it comes to Toyota and there has been since the onset of this whole ordeal.

Paul, do you seriously believe that the government is fabricating safety issues about toyota in order to prop up American auto companies, or are you just tring to stir the sh!t?

FWIW my 2009 RAV4 has been awesome ever since I got it.

I fvcking hate RAV4 and camry's. They are always the people who drive 65 in the fast lane.

I saw a story on the "worst cars on the road"...all of them were domestic companies (not surprising!) No Toyotas, Hondas, Subarus, ...

Guess that story wasn't news-worthy.

That the government and media are taking pleasure in bashing on Toyota and there's almost an agenda out for it as well.

As I said, this magazine who did these 'tests' only said that they "think" it could topple over and they didn't like the computer results of the vehicle stability test. No incidents have occured. They just think they could possibly happen.

All of a sudden now, there's a media blitz all over this... Can't tell me there's not some sort of agenda out there, especially when this sat up top as the #1 story on CNN and other news sites for several hours.

You rest your case? Well you haven't made a point yet, let alone won an argument, but you go head and rest on that. Your insinuation was that this was some sort of government orchestrated scenario to boost american automakers and depress toyota. Then soemone posts a link to a story that is completely unrelated to your point and you declare victory? Yes, those cars in that other story are poorly made, yet still on the road. But how does that in any way link to some sort of government plot?

Safety issues, particularly those involving auto recalls, get lots of attention.

Lots of magazines and sites have "best & worst" lists every year for cars. Why would an article highlighting that a Cadillac Escalade is not good value make the front page? But a safety issue is something else altogether. Consumer Reports doesn't give "don't buy" warnings liberally (the last was in 2001, according to the article), which is why this is seen as newsworthy, especially considering the recent Toyota safety issues. Imagine if incidents had occurred and Consumer Reports didn't publicize their conclusion. (Perhaps they should wait for a few fatalities and then bring out their conclusion?) A lot of people consider CR a trusted consumer information resource.

Not everything is a conspiracy.
