After your fiance arrives in the US...about how long does it take to receive a ss# after you apply for it? i've talked to one woman who lives in missouri that said they told her it could take as long as 3 months!! :( Is that normal??

With a K-1 three months isn't possible, because your status would be expired by that time and SSA will not assign an SSN if your status is expired or within 14 days of expiring, but have seen a couple of cases where the person's status expired before the SSN was assigned. It all depends on how long it takes to verify your status.

Now if applying with an EAD card I have seen it take that long and longer.

With a K1, you should get your SSN in about two weeks after you apply.

Why does it take that long (longer)? I've asked for a name change, I already had a SSN and they say they have to verify my details because my status has not been updated on their system feed from INS. Only plus is I already have a valid number but desperately need the name change.

SSA mails the G-845 to immigration. Immigration processes it and then mails it back to SSA. So the mailing time, plus the time it takes someone to look at when it gets to immigration or look at it when it gets back to the SSA office eats up time. Plus the flaw in the system is that the SSA office doesn't check to see if it got there and immigration doesn't check to see it it got back to the SSA office.

SSA is supposed to go to an electronic verification request sooner or later and hopefully that will speed up things by cutting out the mailing time and things getting lost in the mail.
