Had a bit of a run-around today, when it came to getting the authentication of information provided signed off on my application for the 'certificate of conduct' from the Bundesamt fuer Justiz in Bonn.

According to the instructions, you either have to get a Notary Public to sign it (and my only local one is charging £120 for this privilege!) the police station (they won't do this), schlep up to the embassy (hmmm, could do but not until next Monday and I'm keen to get it ordered) or a 'public body'.

What have others done in order to satisfy the qualifications of the signatory?

Also, how did you get the rate of conversion for the UK cheque? I spent 2 lots of 45 mins on hold for switchboard today, and still didn't manage to get through! Dad was going to draw a Eur cheque from his multi-currency account but it's a swiss account and the form stipulates it has to be euros from a german bank, or a £ cheque.

TIA
